ok, call it a coincidence, but since I signed up to this new forum with my optusnet email address I have received 10 spam emails and 4 of them had viruses picked up in them.

I don't care what you say, [b:351e7bf761]I'M NOT HAPPY[/b:351e7bf761].
anyone else get this?

I hardly ever recieve spam, Maybe one a month at the most. i signed up here just today, and when the account confirmation email came through so did some spam. :?:

Sounds like co-incidence to me, if it really did happen.

"if it really did happen" yeah, new member just joined up to make untrue posts about recieving spam. Why would i do that ??

2 more since i last posted. I highly doubt it's coincidence.

Not happy !!

Oh, and BTW, it was a brand new, never before used email address. My hotmail addy was no good for registering.

Anyone care to explain that ?

So, you're accusing us of taking all the email addresses and selling/giving them to some unscrupulous spammer???.

Not accusing any "us" of anything. Given the above info, how would you expect me to react ?

cosmo, i think he was referring to getting spam once a month on his [u:df9c7aef21]old[/u:df9c7aef21] account.

desty, i don't accuse you guys of anything, but perhaps you could look into this, or explain how-come i got 10 spam emails since signing up with this site on my optus email.
that is why i never use it for anything other than family/friends.
but seeing as you are so insistent on people having a paid email account to access this site (not that I see how that helps you at all), i think you owe some sort of responsibility to the users to find out [u:df9c7aef21]why[/u:df9c7aef21] this is happening.

nemo,
did you make your email private or public in your options.
because as far as i know (and thet is very little) there is programs that search web pages for email addresses and then ad them to there spam list.
so if your email is set on privat that might help

LordFlashHeart

How it helps is it gives them the ability to ban troublemakers without them just signing up with a new username on another freemail account.
Yes people could switch ISP's and sign up again but it's a big pain in the ass to do so, especially if they have Broadband and it's under contract.
It's a great idea and a good way of controlling who has access to the site, making the forum a much nicer place for those who are here to learn about and trade fish.
There's a few people who have had trouble because of this but if things are dealt with calmly and patiently I'm sure there are ways everyone can get access in the long term.
Flying off the handle and making nasty posts or wild allegations like this isn't helping the obviously difficult and time consuming task of getting this new board up and running.
Also, I have no spam since registering.

Yea i have had abit of spam, but i get 99% of mine blocked at the server. As for this stopping trouble makers from registering again quickly, thats just not true, On ezboards I posted up my site which you can pick a username and password click ok and you have a new account, no questions, no shit. And thats just one of thousands of free email services out there.

And you cant trace a paid account any more than you can trace a hotmail or any other free one, I dont see the point honestly.

They have alienated a few people for no real reason. Either that or phpnuke (the program this site is based on) has that as default and they didnt know how to recode to stop it.

look,
i like this forum and the users and mods/admins alike, it's a great site full of great info and great bargains.
i am just saying i find it all to weird that i get these spam emails (with viruses mind you!) within mere hours of registering my email with this site.

yes i did make it private, so you tell me what's going on.

edit: by the way, if you look under the box where you enter your email address, you will see that it does [i:27abfb8698]not[/i:27abfb8698] display that email address.
i have chosen to display my hotmail account email as my 'dummy' email address.
no spam there?
