Don't throw out your stems. Get an old 1fter or something with a bit of substrate in the bottom and put the plants in it out the back so it gets sunlight whether it be direct or indirect.

The missus had Silver Dollars and decided to put plants in with them and as per usual they ate them down to their roots. I put them in a 1 fter and later a 2fter out the back with just afternoon sunlight, no filter, no chlorine neutraliser when I refilled the tanks and no lids and they came back good and healthy. That way your not wasting money on plants that can still be utilised. Hope this helps.

Bryce.

I set up a new 3ftX18inX2ft high tank about 3 weeks ago.  I have used 7kg of Iron gravel type stuff mixed in with the 30kg of red gravel. I use a liquid fertiliser once a week. Have a 4x36 watt compact fluro and have hooked up a Co2 bottle. The plants went in about 1 and a half weeks ago and they are growing like weeds. If you can the Co2 is a huge boost to the growth of your plants.
Hope this can help you.

Here is something else you might like to consider.
Java fern and maybe jave moss, but its messy.
I find they are not fussy about light, you just use light fishing line and tie them to wood or rocks and forget them.
They stay looking good and multiply & multiply & multiply.
