Whilst the majority of fish at the auction were of a very high quality and excellent value for money I have to get this of my chest,

out of the few fish i picked up at the recent auction, 1 is dead (died the night after) and the other is very nearly dead. The health of one of the fish was reasonable upon purchase, but untill a closer inspection once at home the fish was definately not healthy, possibly a viral or bacterial infection..
allthough it was quite visible, and i feel the auctioneer should have picked this up , its not his fault, hes there to sell em

They werent expensive but they werent cheap at the same time....

i will in future take a [i:f7fce04df9]really[/i:f7fce04df9] close look at what I bid on beforehand

im not having a stab at anyone but im sure some will take it the wrong way

did anyone else have any problems with fish they purchased from the auction - or is it just my bad luck :(
Cheers.....

Nope not just your bad luck.  :?

Amongst the goodies I bought were meant to be 2 prized Discus. A couple of people had a look at these in there bags. Looked good.(hard to really check fish out that have been in bags since 1pm)
Next day look at them in the tank, moons in there eyes.(Eyes have holes look like 1/2 moons) it is a [b:aca44e7740]defect[/b:aca44e7740]. Good on the "guy" that supplied those, he would of known. :x
Same "guy" that supplied those plecs too Ash.

Hope the treatment works Ash, let me know how you go.

I would have thought that 3 complaints out of the total number of bags of fish purchased at the auction was pretty good odds.
Consider how many problems people list on forums with fish purchased privately or from shops where you've had good chance to view them properly first and I think you'll see that under the circumstances the odds have been pretty good. Let alone the prices.
BUT. (I can't leave it go)
If you didn't notice anything wrong with them on the night how do you expect the auctioneer to do so.
There is only a small number of people left who will do the job any more because they are sick of the complaints and criticism.
Gold Coast was probably the last for another one so very soon there will be no one left to auction the fish for you.
Everyone who works at auctions volunteer there time and I'm sure all of them would much rather be out socializing too be if a few people don't do the work either there will be no auctions or there will be a lot of additional charges to cover paying a professional auctioneer to do the job. Hell I remember one auction when a complaint was officially made "that an Auctioneer put more effort into selling his own fish than someone elses" God what else does he get out of it...
I am not saying that all runs prefectly all the time and the odd fish slip through or bid is missed ect ect but give the workers a break.

[quote:08217c72e9="here fishie fishie"]Ash's title is, just my bad luck?
Which sometimes happens at Auctions.
His fish & the one bag I'd say were fault of the supplier not the auctioners, I was having a go at the supplier.
It is hard for the Auctioners to pick up on everything, I have seen fish handed in before as something was amiss. I think all the people who work the auction do a great job.  :D

As for just 3 faults, umm not everyone at the auction is on the forum, I have heard a couple of other complaints.
Its all minor, auctions are cheap & sometimes sh@t happens.

ps; Ash how did the treatment go :?:

I'm old. I don't know how to do the quote thing.  Yeh Yeh. But......
"Although it was quite visible and I feel the auctioneer should have picked it up."

I know that there are a few problems with a very small percentage of the fish sold at auction but its really no worse than fish purchased in other ways and you have been able to access them swiming around before you decided to buy them.
Sometimes the problems are simply due to a complete change in water conditions ect.
Yes other times deformed fish do slip through unnoticed. All this is true but it annoys me that these few things are ALWAYS put up on forums and the WORKERS are ALWAYS the ones who are Blamed. Its seldom mentioned the really good quality fish and stock that go through too - or any appreciation or consideration given to the Auctioneers and Runners ect who worked all night to sell your damm fish for you.
Linda

ashhhh

justin, the treatment worked great and all fish are doing well,
thanks mate

Linda,
I totally agree with you. No-one is infalable. We all miss things.
The Auction is a hectic place with so much to do and so little time to do it in to keep things flowing along.
I have been a runner quite a few times and even had a go at filling in the Auction forms during the Auction at the Gold Coast.
I am sure ppl have no idea how hard it is to do all the jobs that have to be done during an Auction. I am yet to get up the guts to have a go at Auctioning, maybe one day.
All the Auctioneers do a wonderful, thankless, FREE job.
Bob, Dave, Don, Bill, Scott, and all the others are great and we would have NO AUCTION without there wonderful help and experience.
Cheers to them and we hope they continue to help out or we may see an end to our bargin Auctions.

Thanks Phil.
Yes people don't have any idea how hard those people work and its usually the ones who do nothing that critise the loudest.
The complaints are endless from 'putting too much time into trying to sell a fish' to 'he didn't try hard enough to sell it' from the seller.
'Stupid blind bastard didn't see me waving at him' & ' Shit mate can't hear a word your saying' .
Then when they do pass on a bag that they don't feel is good enough the seller lodges written complaints to QFAS about it and the list goes on & on.
I get annoyed with if because its the same after every auction and has been for years.
Bob and Sonya were the only 2 Auctioneers who would
go to both Gold Coast  and Brisbane all the time.  Bobs now finished with it and Sonya has a baby.
None of the others can make it to all the auctions and others can't get there until after 6 with their own commitments so where does that leave auctions?
Its true not everyones ever going to be happy and in some cases they have good reason not to be but QFAS will address genuine problems and take appropiate action. People who have a lot of trouble will be given assistance to improve there bagging and the quality of what they offer ect. Give QFAS and the workers a fair go. They do it for the love of the hobby not personal gain.

   for (Alert admin)s sake, yes they, (everyone thats involved with the auction) do a great job, and there are good priced fish to be had, I agree with everyones comments in this thread  BUT this post was put up to see if I was the only person with problems with fish from the auction, not to have a go at anyone involved with the auction.  ..... theres no need to get so defensive
dont try and make people look like whingers by taking comments out of context, because that is exactly what you have done to this thread....
Cheers.....

Don't make the comments then.

To add to this constructive post I will have to agree with you Ash.
I have had fish I bought from the Auction die.
Infact quite  a few.
I look at it constructively.

Firstly a pruchase from the Auction.
Not fed for 2 days prior to the Auction (that is how it should be)
Put in a plastic bag, often without oxygen, at 10:00am for some ppl.
Nice comfortable car ride in a bag, often in the heat, for possibly over an hour.
Pushed around from pllar to post while being readied to be Auctioned.
Held up for all to see, often being poked and prodded by all and sundry to check the fish is alive and well.
Put in your box for another couple of hours.
Driven home via another comfortable car ride for possibly another hour.
Then put in a tank with often established tankmate with territories at usually 12:00am-1:00am very tired, stressed, and sometimes pissed off.

On the other hand.
A purchase from the forum or shop.
Drive to the shop or sellers house, often during the day.
Pick out your fish.
Put it in a bag.
Once again another confortable car ride home.
Then put in a tank with often established tankmate with territories .

If we look at this list constructively i am sure we can all see where problems may be occuring and the often the price reflects that.

We are all making valid points but I think we are forgetting the one thing that matters.
