um, this may sound silly but how did you get the syphoning started,im guessing you didnt suck on the end of it <
><
>only ''easy'' way I could think of, would be to set it all up as you have, cover the end of the overflow outlet pipe and fill the ''overflow box'' full and then remove your hand and the downforce of the water leaving the box would ''pull'' the water from the tank over the U bend, removing the trapped air in the U bend and then the syphon begins?.....<

ok the best way I ended up with was to hold the u upside down under the water to get all the air out, cut the bit of a balloon that you blow into off to make a bigger hole, stretch it over the end to go into overflow. then, keeping the oncovered end submerged at all times, (make sure the tank is almost a full water height) poke the covered end into the overflow then when it''s submerged knock the balloon off the end with your fingertips.<
>It''ll float to the surface once the water starts to run, or you can just collect it from the spilltray on the sump.<
><
>there''s probably other ways but the U must be totally viod of air or it''ll seriously restrict. water flow, air bubbles aren''t about to go downwards for you. It''s also a good idea to keep the inlet part of the tube away from airstones/verturi stream from internal powerheads to stop air accumulating at the top of the U bend.<

at the top of the pipe drill a hole and silicone an aquarium style air valve in place,<
><
>attach air tube, open valve suck all the air out close valve syphon goes.<
><
>or just slide a bit of airline up one of the down pipes to the top of the pipe and do the same thing , and remove once done. Mick, Rockhampton<

nothing they just stop<
><
>dramas are only encounted when they clog up, or if too much air gets in them reducing the amount of outward flow, resulting in tank overflow, which is why a big one is much better<
