When it comes to  my own peace of mind for breeding purpose I would rather not use it, there is no other reasons why. For a LFS or some one with display fish I see no problem, or who ever chooses to use what ever they want is there choice.

We find that Sera Flora all veg brings out great colour and it is good for adult fish, every time we buy fish i ask what they feed them including aditives. there are a lot of LFS that use white crane.

ashhhh

Mac it is my choice not to use it on my breeders no other reason.  if you have Africans  that really need colour enhance then maybe need  to look at the fish instead. if the requested  for using such product to sell my fry then I would use it . Mac then i would buy a Kg as it works out cheaper lol
looking forward to see some fish that have been on it for a while.

Quoteproblem was the price, 7 grand a kilo for the pure stuff

if it is this price for the good stuff then what is in this stuff to make up the difference in volume. i am not having a go at anyone just curious.

i am only new to this breeding thing and i will get around to talking with my  Aquaculture buddies [my inlaws] i know they dont use it. but if it is on there list then it has to be good for human consumption mmm  Fronty tonight nah
Mac good luck with it. i might get some discus then get some from you till then cheers

Gasnitro,

I think you answered your own question, just take a look at the technical analysis (if you havent already) on the cyanotech web site and hey, it's not for everyone, it's personal choice.

I, too, was disgusted at Andrew's comments. MAC is providing a service to the fish community by offering alternate food. As a trader/wheeler-dealer (or whatever you want to call it) myself, it always annoys when people post these kinds of replys. It is often difficult enough to source and arrange distribution of aquarium products without having to read ignorant, uneducated and blatantly rude (disrespectful) input such as that.

Good luck with it MAC.

I was just wanting to find out if this product you mention here (from micro algae) differs from this product (from shellfish) available from an online fish supplier in OZ. I ordered some about 12months ago but when it arrived in a repacked container with no label or anything written on it I refused to feed it to my discus pairs. I still have the unopened container and I can tell you 30g of this stuff is a large volume as the powder is very light.

Here is a description of the product I have.

All Natural Colour Enhancer To Be Added To Frozen Fish Foods Produced Under Strict Aquaculture Standards, Imported From Hawaii.

Astaxanthin, a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment produced from shellfish, is a powerful biological antioxidant. Astaxanthin soaks up free radicals and protects against their negative effects. While it offers significant health benefits Astaxanthin simultaneously increases pigment and greatly enhances the colouration of fishes. Not only does Astaxanthin provide for pigmentation in animals it is also required for their correct care. Fish cannot produce their own carotenoid pigments, therefore their diet should include the plant life which in their natural environment provides it. In aquaria this is rarely possible and a healthy substitute, such as aquaculture grade Astaxanthin should be offered regularly. A little goes a long way. Simply sprinkle onto frozen food "like salt" (no more than a pinch) and turn any form frozen food into a highly nutritious super colour enhancer which REALLY works.

If you have been avoiding controversial commercial colour enhancers now you too can have fish coloured to their maximum.

I amjust interested to know if the source of the Astaxanthin has any effect on the quality of the produce I guess.

Mistakes Are Crucial

Hi Ann,

Hope the Discus are all doing well.

I'm sure there are many products out there that have Astaxanthin in them, it has been used in the aquaculture industry for many years and especially to colour up salmon, prawns and other sea food that we like to see a nice pink in colour.

It is an algae but from the reading I've done it's not necessarily just from shell fish, however, it does occur naturally as Astaxanthin is the very reason Pink Flamingos are pink and other animals and fish are the colour they are.

NatuRose is simply a tradename for a product that contains a percentage of Astaxanthin but at the same time it has a great many other beneficial ingredients such as minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, this is why a few of us up here on the coast decided to buy it .

Your quote is quite right, in the wild fish and birds can eat foods that contain carotenoid pigments whereas tank kept fish can't unless they are given them.

I can't comment on the product you have but I would imagine it's not a lot different to what we are getting.  My suggestion would be to ask your supplier for a technical analysis so that you can see what's in it.

One thing I can assure you is that Astaxanthin is natural, it will not harm your fish, it won't stop them breeding and it will generally better their health.  However, some people won't use it regardless, it's their choice.  I won't use many of the pre-packaged foods out there either, I read too much but we won't go there!
