Received in the mail today a draft document regarding a national noxious fish list. Go to www.brs.gov.au/ornamental and scroll down to download.
Have a look because there might be some American breeders that may be peeved off a lot . Not just in QLD.

Even african keepers won't be too happy with the emperor cichlid bein on there I really can't see how they can work it with the majority of our water ways (fresh only) being acidic. I could be wrong though.
don't just want to breed good fish I want to breed WOW fish.

FISHKEEPING IS MORE THAN A HOBBY IT IS A DISEASE MAN!!

How about they just kill the industry altogether.

i think that us african keepers got out of that pretty lightly, but i also love the tank busters and just about every single tank buster that i know is on there!

Polypterus      :(
Erpetoichthys  :(

i know that those species were only on the proposed list but im gonna be crying in they get on there!

Makes you think that the Govenment was trying to get on the good side of the fish industry by letting in fronts, L168's(haha good job they did to, hehe) and some loches.

Then they hit us with this proposed list! hmmmm

Cheers

I don't know if any of you guys heard it but someone was tellin me the other day that green groups are talking about trying to stop shops selling birds and fish as they claim it is cruel what aload of crap if it wasn't for bird and fish keepers there would be a lot more extinct species in the world. If you have heard let us know.

Yeah like the koi carp in NSW, tilapia in northern Qld, Red Devils in Coffs harbour...yep us fish keepers doing there bit to make others species extinct too.
Unfortunitly alot of what is going on is causing more headaches rather than saving species.  :(
The thought of replacing fish that have become extinct in the wild is a very rare possibility.

Now, now Boyd, I can sort of see where you are coming from, I think we are very lucky to have what we do have.
But Tankbusters, :?
I seem to remember a post of yours a while ago about how bad the Nile Perch was in Lake Victoria, sorry I don't see the difference?

[quote:e8f778dc73]Aquarium fish make great pets, but if they are released into the wild they can pose a serious threat to Australia's aquatic biodiversity[/quote:e8f778dc73]

Surely the same thing rings true for cats and dogs (except not aquatic biodiversity, but you know what i mean  8) )... Dont see a push to have them banned!!

Packs of wild dogs chasing and killing sheep and cows, feral cats killing anything that moves. Gotta love double standards

Hey frenchy got some news for you the tilapia were an experimant gone wrong as for koi I thought it was european carp which were also introduced by the powers that be to help fishing and don't put me in the fish keepers that release fish as if I don't want or can't sell I euthenaise.

And I was talking about responsible fish keepers, and I agree with replacing fish to the wild it is a very unrealistic possibility but at least the species I am talking about are still alive and reproducing in the flesh and not pictures in books. like the dodo birds.

Not that i totally agree with it, but just becuase there maybe double standards in the past, doesnt mean they shouldnt try and get some standards for the future.

Relise that your keeping imported fish. You may very well do the right thing, but we all know that not everyone does. Its alittle like lazy dog owners dumping there dogs on the street, will lazy fish owners do the same?

And as for the frontosa, not to brag, but my 7 bar kigomas today have there first mouthfull.. Ill take orders

watsonboyd

i see the differance frenchy,

thats africa and this is australia!

and the nile perch was put into lake victoria on purpose for its game fishing and the abilitiy to grow a fish that could be eaten by the communities around the lake.

thats the differance.

hey congrats on the 7 bars I agree though that there needs some reforms but when it comes to what I heard the other day that certain groups plan on trying to totally ban fish keeping I think that stinks.  Personally I agree with most of what is on the noxious list but they have to look at each fish as an individual case not because of growth size.

PETA have been trying to ban keeping all pets for years, even cats and dogs. Luckily, even the government knows they are totally insane, do some research on them and thier ideals, it's spooky.
There's a lot of fish that are still only on the proposed list or "grey area" if you hope that they are going to be left off then now is a good time to start getting behind the people who've been warning us and fighting this from the get-go.
The biggest problem here isn't the government or environmentalists, it's the idiots who are dumping fish. Unfortunately for us, if responsible aquarists can buy these species then so can any tool. I just hope that they let owners of these fish keep them till they die naturally on the grounds they dont breed them, otherwise there'll be some sad people.

I think the noxious list is great! I have always loved people bringing in the fish illegally at inflated prices!!!!

But to be serious if the fish pose if the smallest risk to our native stocks they should be put on the noxious list quick smart.
(can you tell i'm a bass angler?)
ow many dudes you know roll like this?
How many dudes you know flow like this?
Not many, if any
Not many, if any
How many dudes you know got the skills to rock a show like this?
Uh-uh, Uh-uh, I don't know anybody?

LordFlashHeart

I'd have thought you'd be hanging out for a feral population of largemouth bass then efc

Apart from the fish list,  take note of the proposals for breeders, interesting reading for anyone with large [<10,000 litre] fish rooms.

I wouldn't be too worried everyone, the way things are progressing all life in Australian rivers and creeks will get wiped out soon anyway.  :(
The fact remains our inland aquatic environments are in far more danger of being destroyed from industry/farming/developement etc etc. I read somewhere (could have been Australian Geographic), that at the current rate of development there will be widespread destruction of species in the majority of our freshwater environments within the next 20 years.

Sadly, the noxious fish list could end up being a bit of a non-issue.
