Hey Red,
Can you give us some more info about your setup? What size tank, what sort of filtration, water test results that you have done, water temp (has been a bit hot lately), type of fish, etc.

Sorry to hear about your loss, hopefully we can come up with some ideas about the problem and possible solutions.

Cheers
Steve

ps - do you want to do the next 'guess this fish'??

gc

Try doing a 25% water change, double check the chemistry.
Thats if there are any survivers.

I have lost a tank or 2 of fish over night
1 was an algie bloom and the 2 one was from  nitrates
The fish just couldn't breath
If the tank was cloudy it would of been algie
It was my falt I was over feeding them
he foot steps in the sands of time arn't made by sitting on your ass

real shame red, sorry to hear,
could it be possible the pump in the sump had an electrical fault,
or possibly leaking oil, as some submersible motors are oil filled.
just a thought anyway

That seems rather odd Red  :(  Like you say, all the water parameters look good.

How long has the system been up and running?
When was your last water change? (Maybe something nasty through the tap water?)
Was there any cloudiness to the water pre death?
What sort of turnover do you have with the water pump?
Maybe a lack of disolved O2?
Did any fish survive?
Are there any obvious marks on the fish - did you have a look at their gills?

You're lucky to keep your tanks under 28! Mine are spending days sitting around 30

Im clutching at straws here as nothing obvious stands out.

i think you answered it yourself

Quote: ph. 7.2 to 7.5 most off the time

way to low for Africans
you need to look at why and fix this problem during the day your ph  changes.

if you have any fish left go down to the local  food store get some bicarb epsom salt and rock salt do a 20 per cent water change dilute about a table spoon of each separately  then add to your 8 foot tank do this daily till you reach the right ph.
i hope this helps

Mark, the Ph is low but I'd consider it to be perfectly survivable for the Africans Red was keeping. Africans are more adaptable than you may think. We dont know how long they were in that setup, or what water they originally came from.

It doesnt answer why the Acaras, Gouramis and Rainbows died either so I dont think Ph is the problem.

Nice articles :D

Also i think the filter has not cycled enough or is having a cylcing problem also how big are the fish as the tanks sound like they are only suited for fry with that quanity. i built a new sump recently was up around .01 sacrifice a bristle nose by acciedent and its good rigth were i like it 0
oh my sump is only made from two 1m tanks for around 3700lt
when i first started this hobby i was told a lot of things was running around 7.2- 7.6  all other water paraments ok fry started dieing up the ph no more losses. as for having two different fishes for dif water i would expect casualties.
need to look at fish that use the same water parameters. or have seperate filters.

hi all

yes the sump is 1200lx600wx500h has run for quite a long time and have had no problem's before. the pump this oversized but has by pass, it can turn over about 18.000 litres a hour at full flow it is for raising fry at 3 to 6 cm plus. i was talking to a bloke i know late tonight who work's at the council about the water quility after the rain we had few day ago, because i did a water change 30 percent and tank's cleaned on sunday he said they up the amount of crap they put in are water when it rain's as the dam's are so low the rain turn's the water to like mud.
come to think of it i remember when i had a shower sunday morning i though i could smell like chlorine, so look's like i kill all my fish, buy not doubeling the amount of water ager chlorine, chloramine, ammonia remover.

ps. thank's all for your help without these forum's to ask people for help what would we do sit around till we give up or start again.

cheer's to all

hi all'

i was at mum's today cleaning all the tank's and sump system to start again went i put some rubbish in the otto bin and notice some can's of cockroach control bomb's the one's you buy at the supermarket, i asked mum where did she use the bomb's she told me down stair's. mum had seen cockroaches so she bomb the place to get rid of them so because it summer i leave the lids off to help keep the temp down i read the back of the can and behold it say's remove or cover fish tank's so now i am going to move them around to my house when i make some room.

ps. can't blame mum she's getting to old these day's to now about these thing's my fault for having them around there.

thank's to all for your input your's turly. (RED)

Yeah there is a lesson for all of us there don't use chemicals near or around fish they don't like it also if you do a water change on weekends I would double the dose of nuetraliser especially in tourist ares where the population of people increases on weekends because the town uses more water and the chlorine doesn't get hang time in the pipes to break down properly.
don't just want to breed good fish I want to breed WOW fish.

FISHKEEPING IS MORE THAN A HOBBY IT IS A DISEASE MAN!!

ashhhh

that really sucks, on the bright side (if there is one), at least you found out what caused it and you know you [i:633dfb7ea2]were[/i:633dfb7ea2] doing things right
