Wondering on peoples opinions on Diatom filters. Back in the late 70's and early 80's my folks owned the Red Robin Pet Shop in Railway st Southport and we used one extensivly in the shop and had one for home as well.We would move it from tank to tank and I must say they leave the water crystal clear, usually and hr on a 4ft tank left it sparkling. Now getting back into fish after a 15yr break I am wondering if they are still highly reguarded or are they a relic from the past? I noticed they are expensive here but quite resonable in the US (almost 1/4 the price of here).
Any thoughts?
promise I wont buy any fish this week..... NOT!

More of a relic from the past really, thought they really do a fantastic job of making a tank crystal clear. I doubt there is anything else on the market that would do as good a job of cleaning a tank.
If you really want one, I've got one in working condition and one for spare parts, you can have the two for $40.

Are these things similar to Fluid Bed Filters? Do Fluid Beds do just as good a job? :?:

Anakist

From what I usderstand:

Fluidised bed is for massive amounts of biofiltration in a small area.

Diatomaceous Earth is to get rid of all the *TINY* particles in the water.

As James said, two entirely different principles.

Fluid bed is biological only, best for marine tanks.

Diatom is mechanical only, much the same as a pool filter, its amazing to see how sparkling these filters make the water in a short period of time.
