I have a beautiful pictus catfish - one of the largest I have ever seen ...
his tankmates are two very large silver sharks, two large silver dollars and a few bristlenose .....
The other day, I thought I would give them all a treat and dropped a couple of cubes of frozen brine shrimp in the tank - it was like "instant rocket fuel" to the pictus - he went crazy !!!! - swimming sooooo fast up and down the length of the tank - then trying to jump out of the tank hitting his head HARD on the glass several times........ as a result of this, he became very sluggish, swimming upside down - being "pushed along" with the current from the filter and I thought he was a goner !!!!
I turned the tank lights off - turned the filter off - and put an air stone in the tank to provide oxygen for the other fish - and left the room - as I could not watch him die .....
The next morning - he was fine ......... swimming around as if nothing had happened - the only thing I can think of is he swallowed a frozen cube whole and went into shock with the coldness of it.
Has anyone else ever heard of a "kamakazi" catfish ??????????

I think you will find that it was the blood in the water that sent him off
Next time you put some blood worm in defrost it first and drain off the water that should do the trick
Ok so i don't read very goodly so shoot me lol
Good luck
Andrew
he foot steps in the sands of time arn't made by sitting on your ass

creter

its a catfish not a white pointer, besides that it was brine shrimp not bloodworm savage roo.

LOL. The catfish version of an icecream headache!

I have a pictus, and while he's pretty active, he's never done anything like that before!!!

I agree on the defrosting of the food but. It helps them to digest it too I believe - correct me if I'm wrong.
mmm, something..........

I agree with defrosting, I use a fine mesh net and thaw it in a bit of water. after the first time you will think"eech, I been putting all that crap in my tank?!"
promise I wont buy any fish this week..... NOT!

Ulysses048

Please explain?? - all what eech ?? - is there a residue left from the defrosted brine shrimp?
I have noted that this product does not have protein content etc displayed - is there a better method (apart from hatching your own brine shrimp) to feed.
I feed frozen baby brine and boiled egg yolks (in a stocking - squeezed into the water) to my very small fry as well - is this, in your opinion, not a good thing to do?
Your advice would be appreciated.
Regards

Ronin

theres a bit of cloudy stuff from brine shrimp, bloodworms are worse, you get a lot of blood from a cube. as for egg yolk I really dont know on that one

defrosting is probley the better way to go.... i crush the cubes in the tank water so all the fish can get a FARE feed or even placing the frozen cubes in a cup of water and get it to disolve that way and then just tip it in the water
e been me while im doin my thing

ashhhh

best way in my opinion is to defrost in a small cup of tank water and then pour it thru a sieve of tea strainer, leaving just the food behind and getting rid of the fluid they were frozen in.
the less crap in the water the better
Cheers.....
