Gday guys

I have a friend who just mentioned that they would like to keep an octopus instead of fish.

Is this possible? I haven't personally heard of anyone keeping them.

If it is possible, what is required? Where do you get them etc?

Thanks in advance for any info

Hiya,

Keeping Octopus can be quite a challage! very interesting creatures though...

They can be obtained from any marine fish supplier if you ask, but not real popular as they require a tank on thier own anything else is on the menu...

They love pristine water conditions and loads of hidy holes.

A lid under lock and key is good as there exellent escape artists. They can fit though anything smaller than there beak!  might need to put mesh over all those filter outlet/intakes... and cover up any gaps real well.

It they squirt there ink around, you'll need to change at least 30% water immediatley or the octopus may die... Can setup auto water changers for this these days.

They'd be one hell of a pet tho how cool would that be?.

That was why she is interested, she reckons it would be cool!  I don't get it myself, one octopus taking up a whole tank and it will probably hide most of the time.  Then if it squirts itself.............

there was a show on foxtell a while ago about the octopus and how smart they are, anyone seen it? it was amazing, the octopus was in a tank at one side of the room, there were fish/a fish in a tank on the other side of the room.  the octopus climbed out of it's tank, crawled along the floor in into the other tank where it either killed or ate the fish.

lotta myths about keeping them.

but they aren't that hard really
Just need a bit of planning, lot of feeding and some research.
