Hi,
I have a possible pair of 22cm Oscars that have just began to jaw lock and fin slap. I have never seen them fight before, so I am assuming that that they may be doing a mating dance of sorts. They are housed in a 10ft tank with 5 other small fish, which consist of; 1 x a 5 stripe (11cm), 2 x Green Terriers (13cm), 2 x Convicts (6cm & 10cm)). I have 40kg of gravel and some largish rocks in the tank. I have a Pro Aqua CF -1500 and an internal Ethem filter. The Temp is currently at 26 degrees. Can someone please give me advice on what to do? Should I take out all the large rocks and put in a piece of slate and remove all the other fish? Do you think they are ready to breed? Any advice would be GREAT!!!
Muttly maybe able to help me, I noticed you have breed Oscars before ļ
Thanks all in advance,
Ben.
G'day
Your oscars obviously seem happy in the enviroment, thats why they are behaving like they are. I wouldn't be moving things around as this will only upset them.
i would leave the tank as is.
The only thing i would be worried about is the other fish but seeing as they are in a 10ft tank i dont think there will be any problems.
Hope this helps

That was a major typeo - they are in a 5ft tank.
Do you think i should add a piece of slate in the corner?
The Oscars mainly stick to one side of the tank and the other fish on the other.
Thanks,
Ben.
Ok then thats a differant story.
i'd pull your other fish out if you can, or put some more rocks down the other end of the tank (where the terrors and other fish are) and make the cave just big enough so the oscars can't get into them.
But i'd always keep one eye on your oscars, because they will bite the hand that feeds them!

They will lay their eggs on any rock really, but slate is a good idea, once again watch your hand!
Boyd
I will place a flatish rock in the tank on there side.
Thanks - Ben.
if your worried about the other fish, you could allways divide the tank with some eggcrate?
Eggcrate??? PLease explain :)
eggcrate is a plastic 10mmx10mm criss cross panel used in airconditioning
they are about $30 from an airconditioning factory/wholesaler - the best thing to divide your tank with. I got mine from 'complete air' in burleigh gardens industrial estate......heres a link to a pic to explain what I mean
