Post by: davez104 on August 22, 2005, 03:54:25 PM
Got a few quick pics, a bit dodgy, but I'm in a hurry. Oh, and I cant take photos for s**t! Let me know what you think and if you reckon they are ID'd correctly.

Neolamprologus cylindricus

number 1. is a Neolamprologus cylindricus
number 2. is a Neolamprologus tetracanthus
number 3, 4 and 5 are all correct

Hmmm, was a bit dubious about number 1, thought maybe cylindricus, but the guy I got them from reckons tetracanthus. I still reckon number 2 is a dead ringer for modestus. have studied the two in the back to nature guide and can't see much resemblance to tetracanthus. Not saying that I'm right, just unconvinced as yet  :?  Thanks for your input, keep it coming, there has to be some other knowledgable tang freaks out there.
Thanks.
Dave.

The second fish is a Neolamprologus tetracanthus.

a Neolamprologus modestus looks like this:

the first fish doesn't look like anything i've seen before?

Cheers

Dave the first pic could be better, side on please, but so far it looks like a dodgy cylindricus, maybe a half breed of some type, or just a very unhappy and subsequently poorly coloured fish

Second fish IS a tetracanthus, maybe even a girl! the modestus looks similar but lacks the pearly spots of a tetracanthus, have another look at the pics. The teracanthus will get darker, as it gets older, happier, breeds.

V. moorii looks close to the money, but was thinking it should be more pointy, no so rounded.

Other two are definetly a sexy and elongatus.

What size are these fish?

Thanks all, I'll try and get a few better pics for you. Was always a bit worried about buying from this guy, although I did only swap him a few yellows and blues for these fish. He reckons they are all F1 fish, but if he can't even get the names right I don't think I would put too much faith in anything else he's told me. Was thinking of getting the rest of his tang display, but might think twice now. He has a fronnie, a boops, a couple ventralis, a few cuckoos, a few cyprichromis and a calvus. Will see how these turn out, really like the elongatus though, and the V moori, will definatly look for a few more of them.
As for sizes, only guessing but the tetracanthus would be 13-14cm, the elongatus about the same, the sexfasciatus a touch smaller 11-12cm, the cylindricus 9-10cm and the moori 8-9cm.

Thanks guys.
Dave.

Hey Dave

after looking at the pics on the ACE forums that first fish is not a cylindricus either, he may be the modestus??? not sure the head is a bit blunt for the cylindricus, and there should be more stripes. should be pretty much exactally the same shape as a leleuipi..

were did you get em from, Emerald? it might be worth looking at what that guy has, might be something interesting...

and will let you know about the attenuatus, in discussions now...

Mick

Thanks Mick, Yeah, I got em here in Emerald. The guy from highlands pets and produce had them as a display tank in his shop and sort of lost interest in them so I snapped em up. He only has one of each species in the tank so no pairs or anything. He has a few others left that I have tentatively said I would take. Should get em pretty cheap so should be able to pick out the good from the dodgy and still come out on top, just need some more cheap E yellows and blues to trade with  8)

Thanks again Mick, your a champion!
Dave.

Hey Dave,

Well mate, taking some good piccies there mate, damn sight better than i can take.

Just saying the 1st definately isn't a cylindrucus, that's all- have a look when next here in town, i have a couple in a tank, like mick says, shaped pretty much like a big leluipi with with distince barring.

Dave, any idea what the ventralis in the tank there in Emerald are?

cheers mate, hope all is well!

Lauee.

Hi there Andrew,
Not sure on what type of ventralis he has but will probably pay him a visit this lot of days off. I'll ask and see if I can decifer what he lells me. My pronounciation of latin names is a bit off, but his is WAY out there

While I've got ya, hows the overflow going? Probably won't be able to get over for a bit, got family visiting for the next week or so, so no rush if its not ready.

Thanks mate.
Dave.
