Gday,
Does anyone know where u can get large bits of driftwood (3 to 4ft) from and how to treat them so to limit the amount they stain the water.
I know there was a thread about this on the old site but i cannot find it in here.
Cheers :)
daniel (QT fish) may be able to get some that size.
he's always got nice driftwood available.
as for minimising the stain leached from the wood, i can only suggest you soak it in a tub or similar for a couple of weeks, changing the water every couple of days to get as much out as you can.
hope that helps.
Thanks mate will give him a try.
Where abouts is he located
cheers :)
Near Garden City
check out his ad in the trader section
I have mangrove root collected more than 20 years ago that the bristle nose have chewed to paper thin in places that still leaches tanin into the tanks. The chances of you leaching a log in a few weeks with a few water changes is neglagable..
Live with it. Bog wood stains water,,,,,else how do you explain 'black water' rivers ??????
Alan.

Alan, no-where in that statement did i say that soaking it for a few weeks will stop the wood leaching tannins.
My suggestion was to help get the worst out of it before it goes in the tank.
I suggest soaking for a few weeks, or atleast boiling for a few hours.
I know I had a few bits of bogwood collected from a local river that literally turned the water they were soaking in black after a week. They barely stain the water they're in now.
But you'll never 100% remove the stain.
Don't waste your time soaking the wood for weks .. just get seachem purigen.
I have tried bleaching and boiling my two 4ft driftwood pieces and nothing got the tenin out until I was tald about purigen. I just chucked it in the cansiter and 3 days after water was chrystal clear. Once the purigen gets full you just reacharge it and start all over again.
I would still treat the driftwood before adding it to the tank to kill all the living organisms living in it...
Cheers

with driftwood and tannins, I have found that if you get the lightest coloured timber with the thinnest wall thickness you can find, the less trouble you have with tannins. I was lucky enuf to find a nice chunk of hollowed out branch about the diameter of a small bucket and it was really thin and the tannin leached for a couple of days, but I used a bag of Zero colour which absorbed all the tanins. Now I have a wicked bit of timber in my display tank with no tannins leaching into the water whatsoever... :D
