Im not picking on Lfs''s but on sunday I went into a LFS (not located in nerang) and couldnt find what I was looking for in the tanks out front and no one outfront to ask. <
>I knew they kept some fish round the back of the display tanks and I could here them talking.I popped around the corner and they were sitting around smoking?!, surrounded by tanks full of fish and Indoors,<
>now I dont know if this a regular occurance within this LFS, but none the less isnt there some law now against smoking even within a few meters of the entrance let alone within the store?!<
>I am a reformed smoker myself so call me a hypocrit if u like,<
>but needless to say I was absolutely disgusted <

I am not lecturing you to quit but be aware....<

>Q:Will my smoking effect my fish?<
><
>A: Yes.<
>Nicotine from burning tobacco is toxic at a rate of 10 ppm. Average exposure (two smokers in an unventilated room over the course of an hour) can result in fatalities.<
><
>Concentrated nicotine residue introduced from under a heavy smokers fingernails is a more lethal more direct method of exposure.<

As far as I''m concerned the dangers of smoking to humans is way overhyped let alone the dangers of it to fish.<
>There are 300 odd people die in road accidents every year.<
>The health profession reckon that around 20000 Ozzies die from smoking every year.<
>If you ask most people of a reasonable age, how many people they know that have died in road accidents, they will invariably say one or two or more.<
>Yet when you ask senior citizens how many people they know have died from smoking they invariably say none.<
>Do the math.<
>Also I think that for someone who has been a smoker to be so disgusted at someone else having a smoke, is way over the top.<
>Theo<
> <

i think his point is the possible effects it may have on the fish from say residue settling on water and the residue on fingers coming out if put in the water. <
>that''s the way i see it, i don''t think it had anything to do with the risk of them dying from smoking... Steven & Amy<

I think I would be a lot more concerned about the tonnes of diesel fumes from busses trucks and 4 wheel drives than a few whisps of smoke from a cigarette.<

Well as a smoker, these days i personally feel discriminated against.....yes the people in the store shouldn''t have been smoking in there, due to law and me personally i try to respect non-smokers by not smoking anywere near them but as for the impack on the fish, lol , a little over the top dont you think? ive had no problems but my fish are smoking a pack a day now ......only my 2c. .
theo. <
>everyone has there own opinion and I respect yours, I was ''disgusted'' NOT at the fact they were having a smoke I was ''disgusted'' that they were too lazy to walk 2 meters to the door where they can smoke to there hearts content in the open air and away from the fish AND the customers.I dont care if you or everyone smokes, I dont have a problem with that.<
>The question and answer fact was cut and paste from an adelaide forum, I didnt make that up,whether its true or not is up to the individual to believe, I thought it was relavent to the topic<
><
><
><
>Cheers Ash
Funnily enough I''m not a smoker, I just find it funny that someone who once smoked himself can be that disgusted at someone else smoking. I just hope that when you smoked you always did it in the open air and not near anyone.<

GO THEO i like how you say what you think Ashh don''t take any offence u will learn to know how Theo puts his opinion across he doesn''t mind stepping on toes lol.
Theo pls read the posts carefully as I wont repeat myself again,<
>I said I was not disgusted at the fact they were smoking, but at the fact they were to lazy to walk 2m so they were outside and not in the shop smoking around stock and customers, I dont care who smokes or doesnt smoke, that doesnt bother me, and yes I did use to smoke and yes, was aware of where I was when I did smoke, I now also have more $$$ to put towards my fishkeeping and loving every bit of fresh air I
eathe<
>hope that clears it up for you.<
>I thought this post may rub some people up the wrong way, but that was not my intention....sorry<

Everything was clear from the start, I''m just glad you didn''t used to drink.<
>Theo<

whys that?
Bahh, people will smoke, people will take drugs, people will drink to much..<
><
>You do sorta have a point, maybe more bad customer service than morals. I dont personally like smoking, 3/4 of my grandys died from it, well the two guys could have been @#%$ from ww2 after watching some shows on the yanks.<
><
>But anywho, I dont smoke tabacco......<
><
>Telling people not to smoke wont change a thing, telling people that they wont get medical attention wont help either, hell im no slim chicken. But really this is a debate for somewhere else than a fish forum.<

>Maybe a bong and a rum?<

theo, not trying to cause any sh!t here, but with the smoking stats, virtually everyone of my aunts and uncles, as well as one of my grandmothers is either a doctor, nurse, or somehow found in a hospital.....working not dieing. my rellies see thousands of patients each every year come into the hospitals. one of the questions they ask of people who are having immune problems and respiratory problems, throat infections and heart problems, is whether or not they smoke. almost all of the cases where the patient is a fair way gone in their illness in a short period of time is because the patient smokes. that is generally because of the constant attack on the body by smoke lowers the immune system drastically and allows bacteria and other pathogens to attack the body causing harm. this is due primarily to their habit. <
>i do not have anything against smokers, quite a few of my mates are smokers...i just wish the ones who smoke in public would keep their smoke away from people who dont wish to be a victim of someone elses potentially fatal habit... i''ve had a grandfther die as a result of lowered immune system fro smoking only one cigarette a day since he was 40, he only smoked one smoke a day for 32 years and it affected him enough for a smal cut to kill him...imagine what smoking a pack a day for that long would do....<
>my 2 bobs worth
What about smoking 100 a day for that long, what do you think that would do.<
>Theo<
>PS I''ve had two friends with triple bypasses and neither smoked, and people with cancer that didn''t smoke, and I dont know anyone thats died from smoking.<

I think I''ve started one of ''those'' posts.........oops
I think this whole thing is going off topic, I say we should leave it or this arguement will never finish. fish fish fish fish turkey fish fish gobble
Been a bit quiet around here lately anyway.<
>Theo<
>PS. Its Waynes fault he asked me to elaborate<

I agree with you dyce.....
theo<
>yes, not too many interesting things to read lately<
>Ash
ok,<
> we have all had our say on this matter and b4 it get out of hand i want the last say. i smoke but i wish i didnt. i know that in the long run it will effect my health which at 45 starts to play on your mind. i look around now at guys that are in their 60''s 70''s and the one who dont smoke are far and a way healthier and living life to the fullest. now i know some of you will say , yer but my uncle is 75 and smoked a packet a day for the last 50 years and is doing fine, well he''s one of the lucky ones, but over all it does effect your health for sure.<
><
>as far as smoking in the fish room i do it sometimes but have been told that the smoke will get sucked in by the air pump and will pump it straight into the water via air lines, this cant be good.<
><
>lfs owners/workers sitting on their asses,<
>well thats a hard one, most have their own thinking on what to do as far as , do you go running up to a customer as soon as they walk in the door, or do you let them wonder around at their own leisure. i know i dont like being quizzed as soon as i walk in the door but given 10-15min to look around then asked would be nice.<
>and smoking in the shop well that is against the law so i think they should have been out side.<
><
>someone said that us smokers are being discriminated against, well in a way we are. just resently i was at an open air concert and the lady behind us was having a bitch about us smoking, she even asked the cops if we were aloud to be smoking and they said yes , nothing they could do about it, they finally moved, one for the smokers....<
>i really think they are going a bit to far with the laws, ie no smoking at the shopping centre, beach, resturant, and even the pubs and clubs might have to have to be non smoking venue''s and their telling us we shouldnt smoke in our own home or car.........cmon soon we wont be able to have a puff in the streets next.<
