I've seen two types of peppermint BN. Some with white on their fins and some without. Does anyone know if these are two different varieties?
Thanks
Jeannie
Jeannie,
Were these peppermints adults or juveniles ????
Alan.
Hi Alan
I have 2 peppermints largest 8 cm with no white markings on fins or tail. The others I've seen with white markings have been young juveniles not more than 5cm.
Thanks
Jeannie
Jeannie i think you will find they all have the white until they get to a certain length/age, not 100% but thats the case with the ones i have grown out and seen. HTH :D
madbob is correct the juvies have white tips till they are bigger.
ditto, all my juvies have white strips on the tail
Yep,
All those cute little white edges will disappear as the
fish mature.
The reason I asked though is that there was a different peppermint around some years ago when I first got into pepps. The adults did have white edges to the Dorsal and caudal but they were not as velvety black and the spots were bigger but very few on adult fish.
As I knew b***** all about peppermints at the time I purchased the variety that looked better,,,,nice and black with plenty of stars.
It wasn't until years later and I had learned a bit more that I realized that the 'white edged' pepps were not a poorer colour variety, but a different species all together.
Unfortunately, the breeder who had the "white edged"pepps is an old fossil like me, but poor health forced him out of fish a couple of years ago and he didn't really try with his 'pepps' because they were not flavour of the month even though the juveniles were almost the same as the commonly seen pepps today.
I asked the question initally in the vague hope that there were still some 'white edged' pepps around
Alan.
8O I learn something new everytime i read one of your posts Alan :D :D
Yea so do I! There is so much to learn and it is not easy to getting access to practical information. Especially if you don't even know what it is you need to know
I was really disappointed 'George's' field day didn't happen.
Yeah i was more disapointed about losing money  but yeah great to see people like Alan sharing there knowledge and experience, greatly appreciated :D

Thanks guys.
It is encoraging to know that there are at least a couple of aquarists out there gleening a few tips from this forum.
This site has come a long way since the days when there were no sponcers and a few of us used to chuck in a few bucks a year to keep the forum going.
For me, this is a place of learning and information exchange. It has grown to a chat room and a for sale board. That is OK by me. Keeps fish keepers in touch . Just keep the exchange going, every one can learn from someone else's experiance.
Alan
