Title: probably common knowledge, but anyways..
Post by: ashhhh on September 24, 2005, 03:14:28 PM
might just be my luck with them,
but those little glass thermometers jeez- do yourself a favour and chuck em
i have had three digital ones for a while now on different tanks and decided to do a test on my display tank and the results were as follows

1st digi thermometer     27.5c
2nd digi thermometer    27.4c
3rd digi thermometer     27.5c
1st glass thermometer   32c
2nd glass thermometer  22c
3rd glass thermometer   28c
4th glass thermometer   18c

quite a difference

What brand of digital thermometer do you have? I bought two of the Resun ones and there is about 1.5C difference between the two.
Dave.

Hi,

Is the digital one u mentioned a digital pen type or the stick on type???

Cheers
Title:
Post by: ashhhh on September 25, 2005, 11:26:22 AM
yep they are the stick on type with a sensor on the end of a wire that goes in the tank and the monitor sticks to the front of the tank.

not sure on the brand (asian I think) but I got them from aquariums alive in nerang for $15 each, good value imo

Like everything you get what you pay for. I have an infra red laser gun to measure my temp with a range of -50  -  400 degrees which set me back over $200. I have tried most of the other ones out there and the most accurate and cheapest are those stick on strips. Anything digital and cheap is generally dodgy in my experience. I have been told ben from AOA has a very accurate model at a good price but haven't tested

I bought a digital one from Ben at AOA and so far so good.

Seems to be accurate.

[quote:7d7b5335ee]Like everything you get what you pay for.[/quote:7d7b5335ee].......true that

the three that I have work fine and since I tested them all in the same tank and the results were allmost identical so Ima happy. I allso tested with a refrigeration mechanics digital thermometer and it was spot on with the 3 el cheapo ones

have any of you guys thought of the fact that a mercury thermometer cannot be wrong unless it is broken??? this is because a change in temperature causes a change in the space occupied by the mercury. therefore the only way in which it can be wrong is if some mug comes along and breaks it, or the company that made the thermometer has goofed up on the labelling. the [b:c3e6b7c31f][u:c3e6b7c31f]mercury[/u:c3e6b7c31f][/b:c3e6b7c31f] never lies.......
digital thermometers however are exactly that, digital, and rely on a battery to keep them accurate. seriously, wat do you think is more accurate, something natural or a battery operated machine???

While its a nice test you did you missed some major points, to be correct it would have to either a:all done within the tank and all reading device within the same small area or b: all tanks exactly set up the same, I'd be interested in the results of method A, method b does not allow for eqipment variation or faults, depending on the results of that is wether I'd replace my equipment. Sorry to be anal about it it just your point v's Davies da fishman point I suppose, see who is really right

Ash is talking about the digi ones
[quote:d299504eff]
sorry $3.95 at aquarium warehouse[/quote:d299504eff] I take it thats the glass ones.

Matt is right about the mercury too.  8)
Mercury has been used in thermometers since 1714 & only a chemical solution is added to kept the mercury from sticking to the tube of the thermometer. So I'd say it would be spot on, I have never had variances in glass thermometers.

I have seen someone do a test on the digi therms & all gave a different result, 2 degree difference.
To me its like heaters, made in mass, to a setting so there will be variances.

[quote:4ed385febe]and how long were the glass thermometers left in the tank before reading?[/quote:4ed385febe]
dyce - about 3 days

kongiwolf- all tests were done in the same tank , with the thermometers stuck next to one another, trust me they are FUBAR.....

Matt, no where did I mention 'mercury thermometers' and yes they (mercury thermometers) are very accurate
But the thermometers I am referring to are the [u:4ed385febe][i:4ed385febe]cheap [/i:4ed385febe][/u:4ed385febe]little glass thermometers with the [color=red:4ed385febe]red[/color:4ed385febe] fluid in them.
This red fluid is not mercury.
Mercury has not been used in these thermometers for years due to the dangers of mercury poisoning when they are broken. Its is an alcohol liquid.Dont believe me? grab a hammer and crack one open and smell it.(i do not condone the previously stated act and any personal injury caused to others or yourself from carrying out such an act, i take no responsibility for - go see ya mumma)

Does your calculator give you incorrect answers when the battery starts to die? -no
The digital thermometers will keep reading the correct temperature even when the battery starts to die.All that happens is the LCD display panel starts to get fainter and fainter untill its unable to be read. I know cause one that I got of stevey had a dud battery (thanks steve  )and did exactly that.

anyways, I know which I will be using on my tanks from now on.... 8)

fair enough, and yeh, the alcohol ones are cheap, but they work on the same principal, so yeh. but yeh, each to his own.....

They can in fact give wrong answers, though you will find it more often with solar power models giving you  really quirky readings at time of low power (ie not enough light), on both counts from experience not a friend of a friends aunts mothers 2nd cousin on your mothers side.  ))o

Sheesh I was only pointing out certain measures to make sure it was a valid test, dont get your panties in a knot
