Title: Wild caught E/Blue
Post by: Savage_roo on September 25, 2005, 04:44:09 PM
How dam hard is it to breed a wild caught Electric Blue?
I have tryed him with 5 difftent femals even a nother wild female but i think i was riped $60 for 1 fish shit!
I think the fish pool in Australia is over breed and over priced
Fish with weak jaws , bad colour,a drop in fry batchers, fish that won't hold
Breeders that don't pick the best colored male and just going with the Dom 1 at the time?
I'm not knocking the breeders you guys just don't have that much good stock to work with
And good quality fish are a bit hard to find
So you own the fish you breed the fish just do the best you can with what you got
and I find that you guys do sell good priced fish keep up the good work

Well dont know if its just the way im reading it, but if your keeping him with only one female at a time that could be your problem, With mine i found that at least 3-4 females in with the male, As i found the females also sort out there own pecking order in which the females will breed first.

As for bad stock, well yea maybe, but there are quite a few good e.blues around.

I have had him with more than 1 female and he just chasers them all day and won't do his job
I have a few up and coming f/males from good stock(thank god lol)
So he is going in his own tank with them so with luck i might get a good batch and if so
I will give away the first few batchers just because i can lol
So a few good fish might improve the line for others

So how long have you kept fish for Waz????

I have had fish for 25 years and I have breed and kept a lot of them
So how long have you been in the game :?
And i have seen and a lot of shity and over breed fish in my time
And over priced as well
Fronnies sold here for $15 and the same size fish selling in lfs for $75
Yellows $4 in here sold for $15 to $20 in lfs
I know there are a heep of over heads but fair is fair
But there are a lot of good shops out there i know i have been to quiet a lot of them and some i wouldn't even buy feeders off of
But for good fish the price is good
So waz you go look in ya tanks and  say to your self are these fish good enought that you would buy them from a shop if not flush the lot and start over

i agree with wazboyne ,but have to admit there are a lot of shitty overpriced fish around(up this way anyway) and you have to see the parents first before you buy the fry.it just common sence ,as for the lfs being overpriced well buy from the breaders instead of the lfs and you get to see the parents.  :P  :D

Not buy from your LFS.  Who do you think brings the fish into the country for you to buy in the first place.  If you think the fish is poor quality or overpriced don't buy it.  I don't think you're under any obligation.
And who sells these poor quality fish to the LFS...Local Breeders who don't care what they breed  as long as they make a few bucks.
Sure theres far too many poor quality fish out there but its irresponsible breeders who put them there.
If you don't support LFS you will be limited to only the fish that any fool can breed.
Cheers Linda

Im in fish keeping for about 3 years and treat this as a hobby.(befor that I was breeding Boxer dogs for 10 years and done quite good, was vis-president of the club. Alot to do with blood lines in that if you know what I mean)

I can only agree with Linda partially.

If the Lfs would care a bit what they sell, they would not buy the fish in the first place from "any fool" that comes to the shop, and wants to get rid of his fish for half price that the shop can normally buy from reputable or local breeder. I'm talking from experience.
I got number of wild caught or F2-3 fish. When I went to my closest LLfs (Large Local), they don't care about the quality of the blood lines in the fish as long as it looks ok and the price is good she will be right mate.
The quality of mainganos and blue dolphins I'm talking about was appalling. Not saying anything about the yellows or 6 bars with twisted jaws.

So Money speaks and that is Ok in business, but please don't tell me that the lfs support the genuine local breeder.

i agree with robert  the lfs should have some idea of what they are buying instead of taking the sellers word for it.yeh the LARGER  lfs do get in new bloodlines for us breeders but it is the smaller ones who dont know a lot about cichlids who take in the crap and bugger up the fish lines for a cheap buck

Robert I do see what you mean. I too have a background in breeding good stock that you take pride in but I have also done my time behind the counter of the LFS and most customers are only interested in paying bottom dollar. If more people refused to buy these mongrel imbred things that are constantly offered up then both shops and breeders alike would have to lift their game.

Cheers Linda

Savage Roo I neglected to say that  I wish you luck with your wild caught Electric Blue and it would good if more people did keep an eye on their quality and lash out on some good new blood
Cheers  Linda

there is a lfs that sells fronnies for $15 ,you have to buy 10 or there $19 but we bought some from down at h2o in ippy and i would say that all his fish are cheap and good .its been a long time since there has been a cheep shop about and i think its great.

Any chance you can put a pic up of your male. How many did you originally buy, & from who? I know a few people after some.

Sorry just read this
[quote:5a0fbecf5d]please don't tell me that the lfs support the genuine local breeder. [/quote:5a0fbecf5d]

Obviously you shop at the wrong LFS then, poor business skills on your behave ah.   I can think of a few lfs that only get some species of specific people only.
Sure its business, but if you shop around you will find good lfs. Who will get in nice fish for you & at good prices.  :D

The joys of dogs is its easy to see a nice one from shit, you can get papers with history....I have had a bloke from some a Sydney dog club wave me down, to droll over my dog (Whippee)
Unfortunitly you can't get the same for fish.

Also when fish come into shops its in bags or buckets, fish are stressed dropped colours, not to active....sometimes hard to really pick the quality especially with some cichlid species(eg, electric yellows) & the lfs is relying on the good will of the breeder.

Then again one lfs I know of has a 10 foot tank to throw the duds into.

wouldnt it be better NOT to breed the wildcaught male with the regular females that we have here as no one can really tell if they are ahli or fryeri (Sp?)  i mean if they are wild caught i know sooty in sydney had some and they had a location so it would be best not to breed them with others? and isnt that kind of your argument trying to keep the gene pool in Aus good? Sorry if im on the wrong track but it soudns like you only have 1 wildcaught male.

Well looks like I put the bull in the china shop lol
Well there goes a nother batch of eggs down the drain  :(
I made a tumbler the other night put the eggs in and today there moldy (shit!!)
I will have to get a bottal of thet meth blue or what its called
So its only a matter of time i'm going to get this right b 4 it killes me
I will keep you posted
P.s
Oz pets at lawton I give a 3 in fish care
They still have dead and dying fish in their tanks
I don't think you can sell fish with dead 1's floating around the tank
I asked the girls that run the fishy stuff and thay say
They just come in they through some stress coat in the tanks and dump them in
You would think that if somthing isn't working thet you would try somthing elce
They loose 40% of their fish they bring in

There are plenty of LFS that work their butts off for the hobby and the industry and do genuinely look after the breeders but basicly you get what you give.  I look after them too and they in turn look after me.
Supermarket style Pet and Aquariums are  generally speaking only staffed with casual Juniors whose knowledge is questionable at best but these shops usually only stock basic fish and therefore  aren't usually supported terribly well by hobbists either.
Good staff with a good history in aquarium are hard to find and hence well paid and valued (or should be) so it all comes back to overheads.
Really if youre not happy for your local shop for whatever reason don't buy there.  Plenty of good shops are out there so keep on shopping around.
Cheers Linda

Well the f/males I have a r good ones second generation
form a wild batch I got off a friend
And he says if you want a good fish you got to start with the best lol
Ya any way why are they so hard to breed ?
Because I only got the 1 female big enough to breed and the other 2 are only 4cms long, all most there
Next time i have a tank all set up for them when its time so it will be in to the new tank and in 2 week I will strip them out and that should be a good start
I will let u know how I'm going

Sorry guys.girls,
If my reply was not so clear or I sounded smart. I had just re read an  article by ad konings in the Jan edition of Cichlid News. Where various colour distinctions and behavior of "Elect Blues". Are specific to regions of the lake,...and find it hard to understand the quality issue.. Given the wide spread dist throught the lake.. Anyway Nikki has reminded me not to respond to posts after to many beers   :!:

Can't speak for everyone else but my gripe with poor quality comes down to bad breeding.  People who either don't know or care that  the fish they are breeding with have some genetic fault whether it be poor colour, twisted jaws or whatever and just keep on breeding with these fish then when the old ones tire a bit what do they keep to replace them.  There fry of course.
Cheers Linda
