Title: Is planted tanks without snails possible?
Post by: genie on October 02, 2005, 04:42:20 PM
Is it possible to have planted tanks and not have any snails? Is there any to ensure you don't introduce snails with plants you buy? Thanks

i don't know.
some snails seem to hitch a ride on anything.
i bought some mystery snails and they came with hitch-hikers!

maybe a dip in some strong chlorine solution? or bleach? then rinse in some normal water?

lol, in a perfect world yes but we dont live in one......

the only thing you can do is to wash all your plants as you buy them and look under each leaf for the eggs.
the eggs will be a clear jelly like substance that is a blob of about 3 to 4 mm.

Genie,
I remember someone saying ages ago how they bleached their plants as they were getting their plants from local water sources and wanted to be on the safe side. I can't remember what mix they used but washed it off after. There was a bit of die off but the plants bounced back okay. Condies crystals I heard can be used for the same thing but don't know for certain.

Clown loaches are the way to go as well. They love snails and I reckon they are at their best in a planted tank. I also saw snail traps about a fortnight ago at a non sponsors shop. It's basically a clear box with an inwards opening door. You put food inside and the snails get in and can't get out. Or maybe a holding tank. I got a spare 1fter which I used when we got our plants. I whacked the plants in there for a week and picked out the 2 or 3 snails that hitched a ride. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce.

Cosmo,
No dramas. the snail traps were at Pet Country. I can't remember the price unfortunately but when I saw them thought they were a great idea. They had a decent sized doorway so should get all but the biggest of snails. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce.

I had a tank full of snails
I had my oscars in it but I put them in the 6 foot and put my Dolphin and red tops in there and i found that with in 2 weeks the snails where gone lol
Snail trap /all ya need is a glass jar a rubber band and a small flat stone
Put the jar in the tank using the rubber band attach a few picers of Zuccini
to the stone so it not float away
the snails will go in to the jar easy just replace the zuccini every few days and soon you will have a snail free tank
