Post by: lee on October 09, 2005, 09:44:18 PM
I have a big angle fish, can anyone help tell if I have a male or female? And the other fish is a shark that is brownish in colour and has red fins? He is very boss with the other fish in the tank. I also need to know how to tell the sex of this fish so i can get a mate for him  :? or her. So if anybody can help that would be good. thanks lee

Ok short answer first, angels fish cannot be sexed unless they are of breeding age and usually then only if they are mating, some (i have a gold that does) show they tackle sometimes when not mating. A male will have a small thing like a ball point pen tip (triangle cone like thing) between ventral (long feeler things) fins and anal (main under fin) female have a more "tube" like set-up  .

Ok the other fish you have is a rainbow shark (redtail sharks a similar but with only red tail) rainbows and red tails are a VERY territorialy species, please immidiatly provide a "home" (hollow log or similar) for him to call his territory, this should calm him down somewhat. Also depending on the size of the tank, IME less than 20 gallon they call the whole tank theirs and can be big problems. larger than 20gallons usually they seem happy to call their little haven home and while they will swim the whole tank are usually only territorial about their home. ALSO in MOST cases onle ONE repeat ONE rainbow or red tail per tank please unless 4' plus and lots of good places to call home. I really must say please get the rainbow a little home soon, he shouls colour up to nice black or really deep brown with nice red fins when he feel secure

hope this all helps

Andrew

with the angles you can tell the diff with the older males as they will have more of a bump on their head where the fems are more pointed....so ive been told!!

Thanks to wayne and andrew for the help with my fish, the shark always had somewhere to hide but the B/N catfish took it over when I got a male so I going to buy him his own home tomorrow and see how he goes. thanks again for your help Lee
