Annerly Aquarium has some or is getting some, I read it in their advert but as yet haven't had a chance to go trawling through lfs for all the new goodies. Time and space sucks when you haven't got much of either lol. Hope this helps.

K,,,,

Just that P.C., had them at 1/2 to 1/3 the price we all thought might be a bench mark.   And they are not known for bargain deals..

Alan,
Mate thanks for the tip. Might need to check in at P.C. out of curiosity as I haven't had a chance to check them out for ages. What price were they? as I'm in the market for 1 in the near future.
Cheers,
Bryce.

Yep, they are a very good price. As far as i know they had about 50 about 1wk ago, and they won't come down any further in price. But they are as cheap as chips. Hi Alan, sorry, haven't spoken to you in ages. Hope things are going super for you. I had a few set backs, but like we all do in fish keeping, we get back up, clean and fill the tank for the next lot. It's abit of an addiction! Cheers Alan. By the way, a Melbourne Pet shop can get some Zebras in. About 3 months ago, they had some full sized adults, 2 males 4 females, and they were looking for $950 each if the lot were purchased.  Good buy for present, but it would be nice if they went down to the $300 mark.  Artemia is becoming an expensive item. Remember Kurt (fishing trip Innisfail), he bought some super small artemia strain from NZ (can replace Rotifers when Barra larvae hit day 5) for $650 per kg. Unbelievable is all i can say. That's just trivia.  Regards.

Wetpetz $32.50

are they actually L168 or the L104?
Title:
Post by: mile on October 17, 2005, 08:58:24 PM
When you find out, let us know  :D

I bought mine as a 168, but it looks closer to 104 or 105 according to some googling...

I got 2 from Wetpetz at $32.50ea on the weekend. When Malcolm was getting them out we had a chat and I told him that there was people saying that they'd bought L168's but were sure they had ended up with L104's (I think they are Maccus from memory) but can't remember for certain to which he said he'd heard that. He said that they came in as L168's and was selling them accordingly but there is a bit of conjecture as to their true identity in some cases. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce.

I believe that they are L104 P. Maccus

I cant find anything that looks similar but one thing i do know is that they aren't L168

They are 104s . 168 are to costly FOR NOW.
Title:
Post by: Alan Caboolture on October 25, 2005, 09:23:12 PM
Yes we can be pretty certain the little plecos around brisbane were L104,,,Panaqolus maccus,,,,"Clown Pleco" .

But the price was right !!!!

We may get to see some L168's at some stage, but not in large numbers nor that low price.

In my book any new species isa bonus.....

I got three and they are sweet. As far as I am concerned if it is that hard to tell the difference then I dont give a shit which I got. I do know the maccus a few tanks down in wetpetz were different (wider bars) but they were alot more expensive also.
Title:
Post by: bryce2003 on October 28, 2005, 01:09:31 PM
I'm of the same opinion as Alan in that any new pleco species we can get our hands on is a bonus.

However I have to query the bit about L168's being more expensive as the supposed L168's are already cheaper than the L104 P. Maccus so why would this change if and/or when the "real" L168's are or become availible?

I've got 2 new pleco's bought under the guise of L168 from Wetpetz (Malcolm said they came in under that number and sells them accordingly) and another P. Maccus for real cheap as well but from elsewhere (more presents from the missus). Now to my inexperienced eye they look pretty similar but a lot of pleco's look similar and it seems that even a lot of experienced fish keepers and pleco experts are having problems seperating which is which in many of the different species that are availible or not.

My query is this, regardless of whether these L168's turn out to be L104's why would it be the case that the L168's once they are worked out to be that and imported correctly end up costing more when they are already listed as being heaps cheaper than the P.Maccus L104 are at this stage? Seems ridiculous to me when the precedence has been set already in that the L168's are 1/2 the price of the L104 P.Maccus. I'm not complaining by any stretch of the imagination but it seems to me that something doesn't add up if this is the case.
Cheers,
Bryce.

I just saw another 2400 in quaranteen and they all looked to be 104s .
On day the real 168s will get here BUT they WILL cost a lot more because ther are rare.
Title:
Post by: bryce2003 on October 31, 2005, 01:06:12 PM
Okay the real L168's are rarer but as I said the precedence has been set in that L168's are half the price as L104's and with importers etc. knowing these circumstances already.

Now if even some inexperienced/experienced fishkeepers are able to pick out that these new Pleco's are L104's (it's not hard) what are the importers and experts doing? Geez I'd feel ripped off if I had bought some of these pleco's at some of the higher prices a few lfs are offering when the same fish but under a different name are being offered at under half the price in some cases.
Cheers,
Bryce.

When I have paid $500 to $800 each for small plecos in the past,,,,anything under $100 is a bargain regardless.

I really can't see what the fuss is about what species it is that we got,,,,,the price is right !!!

Now that the market is open, price will be determined by supply and demand.

There is always a variation in prices in the market place,,,,,size, condition, availability at the time all play a part in the price.

Just be gratefull these fish are now available.

A real lot depends on what the O/Seas supplyer describes and invoices the animals as !!!!

The importers/buyers here don't get to look at them before they place an order.   Not like going into your LFS and eyeballing your purchase then sounding off because you bought a fish that was wrongly labled and the buyer and seller didn't know.

My contention is,,,you look at a fish,,,,you look at the price,,,you buy ....You have no grounds for complaint,,,,you knew what you were buying !!!!

Alan.

I'm not cpmplaining at all, as I have said I am of the same opinion as yourself in that any new pleco we can get our hands on is a good thing. As I plan on getting a fair few of the new 1's we are getting in now over time. I'm also aware and have no dramas with the prices being subject to availibility, size, condition etc.

It's also good to know that the fish import business is a hope and pray thing. Suprising considering that this is the computer/internet age.
Cheers,
Bryce.
Title:
Post by: dammwoman on November 03, 2005, 06:37:42 AM
Bryce why are you making comment on some thing when you know nothing about it. Wholesalers are at the mercy of the supplyers OS.   Simply exporters didn't have anything like the number of 168's to fill the Aussie orders so they substituted 104's instead. A fish that they have excesses of. The real 168 WILL be $150.00 to $200.00 in the shops and IF you get 1 you will be lucky...They are that rare

PS... All the bitching on this and other forums  just brings attention to AQIS that the fish may not be correct and the result would be to loose this one all together. AQIS may throw it in the 'too hard basket ' so go ahead keep shooting your self in the foot and mouthing off.  I have my breeders.

Let's all appreciate the wonderful opening that a new pleco has been allowed. Yep, the price is very decent considering what you would pay if you bought before the allowance. Horaah. Now, it would be an interest feature if Zebras could be brought in as L104/L162? Could you imagine if in Aqis, there were 2000 Zebs awaiting 10000 people!  The price obvious would be diminished. Dreams are made of $100 Zebras. Who would then complain!!!!
Title:
Post by: dammwoman on November 05, 2005, 02:27:05 PM
Zebra Plecs are now a Protected Species so cannot be collected from wild anymore. Hence the price will always be high and probably only get higher unless someone really gets good at breeding them.
The opportunity is there however for AQIS to now loosen up a little and allow more L number catties into Aust. in the future IF there are no problems with L168's.
Obviously if they are happy with how things have gone they will give a more sympathetic ear to future requests to expand the list but if the carry on keeps up with the 168's then I'm afraid there will be no hope in the future for further expansion.
To all who love Catties..just be happy a couple more types have made it into the country as L168 and don't go and stuff the whole thing up for everyone.

Dammwoman,
Thankyou for answering the question about the L104/L168 debate and the why's of what we are getting and here's to a lot more becoming availible. You have pm.

No. I had most of the 168s at GC. but won't be taking any to Brisbane.
Doubt if anyone else has any to take either especially seeing they only sold for the reserve of $25 at GC.

Spewing, I would have been more than happy to pay 2 or 3 times that and still known I got a good deal. Are you looking at getting rid of any more in the future by any chance as I'd be very interested.

Won't be anymore cheap ones in Qld after the dramas.  All the 104's that were in Quaratine at the time have been disposed of and the bigger 168's that were there at the same time are really sick and in poor condition so will probably not be cleared for release.
Regardless AQIS is now on the ball up here.
Didn't even get much for ourselves as we thought there would be plenty to time to get them.
Title:

Title:
Post by: dammwoman on November 20, 2005, 08:38:51 PM
The very first shipment  of 2000 where all ordered before they even landed, in fact that didn't even fill the orders. Another smaller batch also made it in but the next shipment was 3000 L104's (& stuff) followed by a shipment of Large L168's (the real ridgy didge one).
Its that 3000 L104's that are no more and then the L168's that they did decide to allow in after a lot of argument  are now really sick and will probably not be released due to health problems.
The only 168's to come into Qld from here on will be 168's and nothing else.
Unless things blow up in the other States other bits & pieces will probably still continue to make it in down there but we are paying quite a lot for them again.

Just a point of interest - Dropped into Pet City today to have a bit
of a gander at what's available catfish wise.

Pretty good range for a LFS, too many for me to name with lots
around the $895 mark...    Yoiks, funnily enough I came home
empty handed.

BUT the main point of interest - L104s for sale. You may remember
way back in this thread when they had them for $35. Something about
them being sooo much more common than the L168... Tongue in cheek.

So who wants to guess what they are asking for them now?? No cheating
if you have already been and had a look!   8O

I'll run this as a higher/lower type response... Go for it!

Cheers
Steve

I haven't been to P.C. but my guess would be they are now close to the $200 price. Hey folks, this is like i said, an emotional roller coaster. I offered, at a rediculous price, mature sized and aged L135  2male:4 females for $180 each less than 1/3 the price i paid and you know what, 2 people responded. How can i figure it. These fish are absolutely brilliant, huge, had spawning tubes swelling and moving and only 1 positive person stepped forward and hit the home run?? I can't understand why so many people baulked. Infact, they didn't even generate much interest. What i hope is that this person gets them to spawn and offers them for $100 a piece. Also, considering L134 has been spawned and produces around 40 per batch and has a very quick turn around time, about 4-6 weeks, these fish are i suppose more quick than peps. My my,i guess sometimes we have to be slapped in the face a little. Love the updates on L168. What an interesting thread we're on. Could you imagine how my controversy would exist if Zebra plecos came in at $150 and then suddenly got withdrawn. Wow, time to leave Australia for Europe, Canada or United Kingdom to get the magical little black and white stripped fish. Why hasn't anyone tried to sell some toy stuffed Zebra pleco pillows or undergarments??? Would they sell. Be honest, true catfish fans would put their hands up.

Hey ndoboi,
Are you sure yopu are talking about the L104's...
They do have some in there that are very similar looking.

A mate rang them today and they said they will hold some for him and they quoted him $35 each

I got some 104's from pet city 2 days ago for $35! just be quick if you want them. 168's on the other hand were $295, better indication of what the future holds. For all those who called AQIS and complained....good work now no one can afford them again and any progress made in getting new fish permitted has prolly gone backwards ten years. But I hope you feel better about getting you whinge off your chest    next time look at your fish when you buy it....if you dont like the look of it dont buy it but FFS dont go bitchin and moanin to the authorities.

The L104s that I saw today (there was only 2 of them) were $220ea.
Wonder why there is such a difference... Why are people getting
different quotes  :?:

That's both the price I saw on the tank, and the price that they gave
me when I called them 3hours later.....

Heck, i would have bought them then and there if they were $35

 Jamos - If your mate could maybe grab me a couple if he can
get them for $35 :?:  :?:

I can come down to Brissy to pick them up.

I think that there is still confusion with some shops!

Some people are selling some 104's as clown plecos labelling them 168 for $35

and then selling the same fish for $200 -$300 as 104's labelling them panaque Maccus

Sorry for the scare guys and gals, it appears that my eyes arent working all that well...

PC have L104s for both $35 and $220.. I'd suggest if you want some that you get the cheaper ones..
They're labeled, wait for it, as L168. I just didnt see them when I was in there, otherwise there'd be none
left for you to get.....

Thanks to Jamos for clearing that one up!  :)
