Title: Perspex Tank Ends (potentially Stupid Question)
Post by: Scooterluvsbeer on October 12, 2005, 04:00:30 PM
Howdy,

I Need 4 ends for some 5 footers I have lying around. I can score some Perspex for the right price ie FREE. Is it ok to use this as a glass replacement, any issues with the bonding process ?

Any info appreciated.

Cheers

Scooter

silicon will hold it together no worries, but I wouldn't use any thinner than 10mm perspex, cause it flexs. It scratches easy too.
But I would still do a test run on one tank and fill it [u:5f16de0f0b]outside[/u:5f16de0f0b] just to be on the safeside, and see what happens.

I think silicone might not hold Perspex!!

might be better to double check or do a test run.

You can only successfully glue perspex to more perspex usinng arcrylic cement and if you plan to use it with fish you have to wait at least 7 days for the glue to release all of its toxins. you can glue perspex using a good silicone for light jobs but it will pull apart under any load.
hope this helps

.....thats a load of garbage, I have made small tanks and brine shrimp hatcheries from perspex and they are held together with silicone

qoute from the back of a tube of selleys:
[i:299d4761de]for use on materials such as,
- glass
-aluminium
-glazed ceramics and porcelain
-stainless steel
-many plastics
-most woods
-rubber
-canvas[/i:299d4761de]

but hey, believe whoever you want to believe, or better still try it for yourself

assh maybe kev means that it will not be able to hold the pressure of a large tank.

thats it steve

the question was will it hold the end of a 5 foot tank..

and the answer still is no...

it does bond perspex and if the the perspex is thick enough, it will hold the same as a glass panel, and on a 5ft tank - i would put money on it that it holds, silicon is very strong shit.....
anyways each to there own :D

with the correct preperation and if I siliconed it

Silicone wont bond to the surface of the perspex anywhere near as well as it does to the glass. I've used it to hold perspex dividers in tanks but they were under no pressure in that application.

yeah, proly better to get glass but i think it [i:224220b6d2]could[/i:224220b6d2] be done either way, when I come across some thick perspex I will build a 4x15x18 tank and see if it works as the tank i made was 2x1x1.....quite alot less volume :D

Mythbuster Scotty.

Right the perspex/acrylic is free, so ill try it. And see what happens. I dont have a stand for these tanks at present so it can sit in a corner and age water (see water change discussion  8O ) till it explodes. I shall report back.....

If you make an all perspex tank ash, get the glue for it, it bonds two pieces of perspex together much better than silicone would, you could build a much bigger tank using it, provided you have some nice thick perspex that is.
Check out the calculator in the tank building subheading of the DIY section HERE (http://www.garf.org/)
