Title: google is your friend!!!
Post by: nemo1981 on October 14, 2005, 02:39:12 PM
yeh i thought i'd put this here for the people that can't seem to work it out.

in almost every for sale ad someone asks 'what does it look like, or where does it come from' or 'can u send me a pic so i can see what the fish is like?'

my friends, the answer is here, www.google.com !!!!!
put in the name of the fish (doesn't have to be all of it either) and voila! all the info at your fingertips.

if you just want to see what the fish looks like, try www.images.google.com and it will come up with thumbnails of the pics.

hope that helps ya

Steve,
I thought that was common knowledge.
You know, like if I need electricity at my house I speak to energex.
If I need to connect to the internet i need a computer and an ISP.
If I need to know what a certain animal looks like I use a search engine to find pictures of it.
Guess not if you have to post things like this.

phil, i can't tell if you're digging at me or not, but from your post in the trader, it sounded like you were griping about this very thing.
there are a lot of people here who aren't so 'computer savvy' and in turn waste a lot of their own, and the sellers time in chasing around to see what a fish looks like.

sorry i posted. :?

Steve,
Not a dig at you.
It is hard to make sarcasm come accross on a computer screen.

Andrew,
I totally agree with you.
If I was paying good money fora fish I would like to see some pics of the parents too.
My problem is posts like:
"Never heard of them before, what do they look like?"
"Is that a blue fish or a yellow fish?"
"How does that look different from...........?"
"Where does it come from, which lake.......?"
"Is it African or American?"
and my personal favorite.......................................

"How do I make a sump, set it up, what media do I use, how does it work......?"

We have all seen these questions before and will no doubt see them again.
If ppl just use common sense instead of wasting other ppls time then I guess some ppl on here would be a bit more helpful when asked.

If you can use a computer to find a forum, register using email, log on and find your way around, is it too much to ask that you also use the other wonderful resources of the World Wide Web to answer some of your own questions.

p.s. Before I get flamed about my sump question i would like offer you a way to ask that question without seeming STUPID.
Try this: "What design is your sump?" "How is your sump setup?" "What made you choose the media you use?"
If you use that wonderful grey matter god gave us all you can find out EVERYTHING you need to know with out looking like a KN0B.

Once again.
If the post is read correctly you would see this:

I think that it all boils down to this:

There is nothing wrong with asking for a photo of the ACTUAL fish for sale to check quality etc.

It is plain laziness to ask for a photo because you dont know what that particualr fish looks like UNLESS it is something that is rare etc, in which case you would say "I cant seem to find a pic on the net.................."

I think thats what Phil was getting at.

or if you want to see the fish in question you could alway take a pic and upload it to
http://www.imageshack.us/
which give you an http and then you can post it up.....

Problem is some people ask for photos of 2-3cm E Yellow and Blues, Bristlenose, Gold Comps Etc, Etc. These tiny fish are very hard to take photos of, and even when you can get one , what can you really see.

Also when you are selling fish for a couple of dollars, you're not that keen on taking pics.

I always find that the people who ask the most questions are usually the ones who dont turn up.

i know what you mean steve, and I think the same applies to the general discussion forum...
with regards to noobs and the experienced,
I think it would be a good idea if there was  a 'frequently asked questions' forum added for reference, but then again we're still waiting for the photo forum arent we :P

guys i am aware that if someone is keen to buy a fish and they would like to see the fish itself/parents that they'd like to see actual photos.

the thing i was aiming towards was people who aren't familiar with the fish in question, and ask all kinds of questions like what's it look like/where's it come from etc etc.

these things are easily answered by a quick search on google.

that's the point i was trying to get across.

Funny. Google is your friend for alot of things.

google sump, diy sump etc.

Steve, unfortunately people are just lazy or stupid or a combination of both. I usually find I get attacked for suggesting the word GOOGLE.

I just don't understand. Especially when I get a response " Thats no help, I thought you were meant to help me and the hobby, I have 15  degrees in nuclear engineering I know how to search...blah, blah.."

I think forums are the place to pin ideas/imporvements, probelms, not a place to expect people to hand fed them.

I personally think that "google it" will become a common saying, you can answer just about any question with a good search engine if you know how to look.
But there are times when you get better and more comprehensive answers by asking in forums like these  :D
