Title: ???egg tumbling, what am i doing wrong???
Post by: nemo1981 on October 14, 2005, 11:23:03 PM
ok, so i'm using the good ol strainer with an airstone underneath setup.

not bubbling too fast, just enough to keep the water moving with the occasional big movement of the eggs.
anyways,

i've got about 30 electric blue eggs tumbling, and they are going all weird colours, then they go white and just fall apart.
this has happened wether or not i take them straight from the female as soon as noticing the mouthful, or after a week.

what am i doing wrong here guys?
please, i'm losing like 60%+ of each batch.
advice appreciated

If she's not eating them try waiting 14 days, you mightn't need a tumbler at all just a little tank with an airstone.
if she is eating the eggs then I'd experiment with tumbling a little harder. The whiteness could be from infertility of from fungus. Not much you can do about the former but the latter might be helped by a bit more current that makes sure the eggs are not really laying against the mesh in the one spot.

ok well i'll try putting a bit more air under that strainer and see what happens.

usually my females (i have 3) will hold to full, but had 1 eat a huge mouthful last week so that's why i chose to tumble this lot.

i'll see what happens.

what i do is tumble all my eggs so they move around a lot. if they are sitting still to long, i find they will go off. as long as the air  is not passing throw the net.  also use the plastic screen strainer one more thing use a corse air stone with a tap in air line.
hope this helps

ok you need to put small amount of Methylene Blue in when you tumble the eggs to stop fungus from the air

eggs need to be just moving not bouching all over the place just gemtle turning

When I used to tumble this way I found it worked better without an airstone. I found larger bubbles tened to make for more water flow past the eggs

this is not from air stones or lack off this is fungus and fungus only

you need to put Methylene Blue in your water with your bubbler
