Title: what are the odds??
Post by: coalgrunter on October 15, 2005, 02:27:20 PM
I had my first spawn of a new bristlenose trio and 1/4 of the babies are albino. Now i have to figure out if the male bred with one or both of the females. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Are we talking common's breeding with commons or commons breeding with albino's or albino's breeding with albino's.

I have had common fry look like albino's upto about 2cm but usually develop their standard colouration after that.

yeh same here,
when they are newly spawned, they appear albino, but darken up soon enough.

ok.

From some of the experiments in sydney they are getting 25% albino when CommonXAlb

So you could possible have a bn with the recessive heterozygous albino gene.

Assuming mendelain gentics (I'm a biocehemist not a geneticist)

WTXwt(albino)=

WT/WT 25% = normal
WT/wt  50%  = normal (with recessive gene)
wt/wt 25%   = albino

So you should see about 25% albino.

I think the more interesting progeny would be the WT/wt. Flood the market with some of these, everyone should be having some fun.

I was also going to comment that you could possibly have two fish carrying the albino gene.... you never know.

yeah they are both normals, was more wondering if this has happened to anyone else. The odds are pretty small, but have probably improved since how available albino bn now are.

2 Years ago I had a single albino fry come from my spawnings even had the red eyes this was before albinoes were here in the market unfortunately I had ulcers wipe out 5000 fish in a period of 2 weeks lost every bn I had including parents. I do have a witness a couple of wholesalers came out and saw this fish up close and were rapped. The trouble was I counted the dollars before I rared the fish just goes to show the saying don't count your chickens before they hatch is true.

A friend of ours has a pair of common B/N who consistantly produce a couple of pure white fry with black eyes in every spawn. We tried to buy some off her but she wouldn't part with any. Not that I blame her. Anyway all these babies that she has kept are now nearing maturity and she is planing to breed them all together so it will be interesting to see what they produce.  All the other normal coloured fry have been sold to shops around Brisbane so possibly they may have the genetics to also produce these black eyed whites too.

If some one out there was 'playing about' with normal and albino fish, and did raise some fry.  They could only be sold a normal B/N in the LFS be cause that is what they would look like.

You cannot see a recessive gene,,,,(Albino)

Mate two of these fish and,,,,,,, simple genetics,,,,,,25% of the offspring are albino.  50% look normal but carry the albino gene the same as their parents, and 25% are totally normal.

Aside from the albinos, you cannot tell which is what with others, so it is pot luck from there on in.  The recessive gene will never be bred out.
