[list:668d39d802] can anyone tell what is the best food for ghost knife fish and what other fish you have them in with.
cheers lee[/list:u:668d39d802]
Frozen Bloodworms, Live Black Worms and Mine also eat flake food well.
Don't put fin nippers with them or anything small as they have huge mouths and will snack nicely on small tank mates.
Linda
thats what neon tetras are breed for.....
))o
thanks Linda I saw some in the pet shop and thought they were nice fish and bought 4 for a tank spare I had, there all about 6cm long ans like to hide so only see them at night. There were some for sale that were about 50cm long how old would they be.
cheers lee
old.........
))o
I have a pet one that is 55cm long. Hes 4 years old. They are a bit of a pain at that size because its really hard to find tank mates for him so he takes up a large tank on his own now.
Mine are only 6cm long so still I feed neons tetras to them or wait till there bigger, and what about feeder fish to feed them there cheaper then neons.
cheers lee
sorry lee i was havin a go at ya bud. dont go feeging neons as it will cost you a small furtune to keep.
a cheaper way is to get your self some convicts and get them breeding.... their like rabbits......just add water!!
other than that go the blood worms.
))o
Go to local creek and collect feeder gudgeons and rubbish like that.
So Wayne have you got a breeding pair of convicts that your going to sell me cheap after making me tell my husband to buy some neons at what ever price they are just so I can keep my ghost fish that he didn't want me to buy in the first place. thanks
cheers lee

BTW that tank is full'o fish that would love convict young, angels, ghost knife, kribs, 3 spot, gourami
lee if you have an old 2 foot tank free, go to your lfs and get your self a pair of convicts or if you know any breeders of fish up your way get a few of them and they will pair off...
))o
My 3 BGKs will eat just about anything including live earthworms, mealworms, frozen bloodworms, brineshrimp and beefheart. I've never knowingly fed them feeder fish although my danios make for expensive feeder fish every so often 8O
As already said, tankmates shouldn't include too small or too nippy type fish and they don't do too well with other bottom dwelling territorial fish either unless they all have plenty of space.
Tank mates of my 3 (sizes are 25,30 and 35 cm in a 6ft tank) include cories, bumblebee catfish, plec, bristlenoses, rams and angels and apart from the odd danio all the otehrs get on well :D
Black ghost knives are like most fish they don't like to be kept alone. They will eat anything smaller than themselves and for mine I breed mollies and Platties.
The smaller they are the faster they move, so the little guys tend to eat more live food than the big ones.
We have a 3' x 2' x 2' tank in which we have a 44 centimetre male, a 30 centimetres female and three others at varying sizes male and female.
Watch the nitrates in the tank they tend to skyrocket pretty easily even when all other levels will stay normal.
In the wild they grow to around 50 centimetres in length that kept in captivity they grow as big as the tank by most fish. You can teach them to feed from hand especially when a little the bigger they are the scarier they are when they opened their mouth.
Velvet is there worst enemy, I lost two large ones to this, they also tend to get a bit of mould occasionally and as much as they will tolerate low water temperature this can quite often give them mould or white spot.
They actually tolerate heat better than cold.
Given them a little while and they will be out they are during the day as much as they are at night.
The best thing about ghost knives is watching them. :D
So will I invest in a heater for them and what is velvet other than material. If I get a heater will that stop them for getting the mould.I have a 5ft tank with a big anglefish,3 gourtamis and 3 bristlenose catfish and in the next 2 weeks will be getting some africans so can I put the black ghost knife fish in with them. Or the other tank has 3 medium and 1 big severum and 2 small anglefish and 2 paradise fish with baby B/N. Which tank can they go in with any problems.
Lee,
Either or it doesn't really matter as I've had my 2 in with the combinations you have above and had no dramas. However they don't tolerate higher ph levels very well either from what I have been told. Also if you ever need to medicate your tank be careful and use only half the required amount as they are scaleless fish. Just make sure there is enough hidding places for them. Mine eat anything and everything I put in the tank from bloodworm to flake, algae wafers to other fishs crap. I've found mine are gannots and will eat anything and everything. Like most/all fish they are oportunistic feeders.
Best kept in groups and they 1 of the sweetest fish we have availible.
Cheers,
Bryce.
Velvet is a disease that is often caused by stressing these fish and poor water quality. It's very hard to detect on black ghost knives, when looking at them in the light they have a fine gold dust appearance on them. Depending on the colour of your ghost knive whether it is black or blue colour, it is easy to see on black rather than the blue. Yes they are black or blue depending on the shade of their skin, quite often as they get older they seem to get greyer or more blue colour. I find this is because of the conditions are kept under or simply their size my biggest one goes between blue black and black depending on water temperature and when he's been feed last.
I don't know about keeping with Africans as I don't keep these fish, I used to keep mine in a community tank with clown loaches, bristle nose, Corries etc. Now I keep them in tank on their own, I currently have five in the tank with the big fellow. The used to have a lot more in their but I took out the small ones just in case the big bloke decided to munch on one of them. I also find the small ones eat more live food as they are so much faster than the bigger ones.
I hope this helps
Cheers Danae.
