Post by: climber05 on November 06, 2005, 02:20:02 PM
my mate recently gave me a SACEM Marathon 1000 cannister filter.
I have no instructions on how to set it up and get it started.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.
i also need to now what media should go into each stage.
the filter has 4 stages.
thanks.

ok,
some are self priming, but i find even with my eheim canister filters that the best way is to connect the hoses to the filter, take it out the back, push the end of the garden hose into the inlet pipe and fill it till it runs out the other hose.lift both ends of the pipes, so no water will drain out and carry the whole thing back inside. place canister in position and drop both, in and outlet into the tank  and switch it on. it may make some noises till all the air has been sucked out but when its full of water it will run quiet.

where the water first enters the filter you can put in some bio balls or ceramics noodles, next layer some corse sponge, then some filter wool that you can get from most good lfs.

hope this helps
if your not clear on anything ask!!!

Yeah I use Bio Balls/Ceramic Noodles/Matrix.... in bottom 2 baskets.
Then coarse foam in the top 2 baskets.

Why do I do this :?: I am a lazy git  8O & it means I only have to clean the canister filter about 2 to 4 times a year.  8)

when i primed my new filter i found it quite easy just getting it all setup and in the correct position with the suction and discharge pipes where you want them, and then just lift the return pipe outlet out of the water and suck on the end of it to get a syphon happening and it will prime but either way works just as well

ps. make sure the o-ring seal is correctly seated........
