Title: Bare or gravel for breeding tanks
Post by: Cory Fan on November 06, 2005, 08:35:48 PM
Hi all,

Is u have seen my other post re my latest set up, I would like to seek some opinion in whether or not to use gravel in those tanks. They will be use for mainly as breeding tanks and they share a same sump.

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers.

I have used both in the past for discus I would say bear but for other species i use a light layer of filter sand as this cuts the glare from the bottom and makes the young feel safer they also seem to be able to handle stress a bit better when sold just my opinion.

I've got white sand in with my shellies and 3mm Coffs harbour in my breeding tanks for the Americans. Way too much actually but have no where to store it. I am toying with using river bed sand for my Americans when I pull down the tanks and redo them 1 day. I prefer substrate in my tanks and prefer river bed sand for anything other than my shellies but thats a personal preference. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce.

Hi Bryce,

I do use white sand for my shellies

But have some question for u if u don't mind

Had read a website regarding bare or sand/gravel. one of them had mentioned that by using bare, the fry could find the food easier than having sand/gravel.

What is your opinion?? I do like to add sand to the set up but just like to get more imput before doing so as removing them is much much more work than adding them  .

Cheers

Go the bare bottom for breeding for sure!!  :D

All my breeding tanks are bare bottom...SO much easier..
I only have gravel in all the others so they look nice.

I always find food more quickly if i dont have to look through the carpet to find it..

HI,

Decided to put white sand into those tanks except the breeding tanks for discus.

Do find easy to find the leftover food as the sand are white  compare to the tinted glass.

Thanks again for all the input.

Cheers

bare bottom = way easier to clean.

bare bottom = very ugly after a weeks build up of uneaten food.

I dunno, my tanks are bare bottom atm, but others said its kind of boring without substrate, and I dunno I just feel the fish rather the substrate.

Thomas,
Mate sorry it took so long to reply. The think about sand is that excess stuff doesn't work it's way down very easily so extras stay on top. Maybe you could look at having the breeding tanks with the sand and have the grow out tanks bare bottomed to make things easier but in the end it's up to you. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce.

With the bare bottom tanks- I put the plants into terracota pots with stones in them.. looks good!  :D

But yes, you need to syphon the ugly waist out of the bottom regularly!

and Monty.... Very funny!!
