i dont think so, probably not a good idea though, you cant really tell the quality/breed is some cases, plus moving them isnt a good idea.

Depends on the cichlid aswell.

I wouldn't buy any discus under 50c piece size. Unless you know what you are doing.
I breed them so I know how tricky they can be!

I think breeders that sell their fish under a minimum size of 3-4cm are irresponsible( depending on the breed of coursesome fish are small anyway) as they are less likely to survive the transport.

i dont think there are any laws of such. if you buy any fish at any size,
it is your choice  after all. remember you get what you pay for.

Nothing illegal as far as I know.

As for what i go by;
Depends on the fish, dwarf species 3 cm, Normal species of Cichlids, 3 to 5cm is what I look for.
Jaynee came up with the perfect way to pick discus,

Discus smaller than that, its hard to pick up defects, shape......

Buying anything under 3cm is a risk(IMO)

i wonder if the reason people sell some fish at 2-3cm is because they just aren't setup properly to handle each batch of fry and consequently must try and sell them small to make room.

i try not to sell anything smaller than 3cm.

Yep. Thats it Steve.
You always see pll selling fry. "Please take these I need the room"
People who have the room, like Doug(Dfishkeeper), always sell fish at a decent size.

yeh that's what it all comes down to.

for every species i keep i need about 3 tanks.
breeder-fry-growout.

for some species that can be mixed without confusion i can get away with mixing them in the same tank, but yeh you really have to think about tank space before over committing to a multitude of breeds.

that's why i only at the moment have 5 different types i am trying to breed at a time, it's all i have room for! :(

i have three to four tanks for grow out depending on type of fish/Quanity. i have had people come and buy of the smaller ones. they seen the  adults  i offered them 5cm stuff but still wanted the 2cm ones.
but it is the buyers choice.
