Title: trying to breed black ghost knife????
Post by: Zac_Attack on November 14, 2005, 08:21:59 AM
if you are trying to breed black ghost knifes and in future come across a large pair wat you do is get either: black paint, balck garbage bag, black materials, etc(must be black) then put it in a section where they hang around, but you must cover an area larger than the fish. this way the ghost knifes are attracted to black and will lay their eggs on the surface......trust me it has worked with a friend........

not yet they need to get to atleast 20cm long and males tend to fight against males more than females and also they will seperate the group and go off and pair(the bigger one should be the female)

Zac,
Good to hear another way to do it. I did a heap of research into it ages ago and never heard of success in this way from anyone I spoke to and/or saw. Just waiting for the chance to give it a go myself. Let me know if your mate is keen to let them go in the future as I would be interested.

Lee,
6cm is a bit too small to sex them and way too small to breed. The only reliable way I know of sexing BGK's is through looking at head shape and eye position, other than watching them spawn that is. It's fairly hard at the start especially when looking at smallish 1's that are only just starting to show male and female characteristics. I had a bit of trouble until I was shown definate males and females which made things heaps easier and you should be able to pick out males and females once they start showing the different characteristics. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce..

I have never heard of the black thing either.

I have a freind who breeds these, he dosen't have to do that. Good to know thnaks, if they ever go slack, gives him something else to try.
