Title: explain this ?
Post by: fishybusiness on November 18, 2005, 03:30:52 PM
i have three 1000lt barrels of water all piped together and full of aficans
up until last night the water has always been green with visability no more than a foot deep and when i woke up today i went outside to find all three barrells thats 3000lts crystal clear (i mean it looked as if you could drink it)
i have done nothig different and all that is running them together is a 1000lt/h pump and a home made bucket trickle filter
can any one explain what happen i'm not disapointed acctually excited now can see how many fish are actually in the barrels.
cheers
nigel

that really is weird.
i can't explain it for you, but i can say that i have had a similar example in a 4 footer of mine.
1 day it was pretty green and mucky, next day clean as a whistle.
crazy huh. :?

Just as water goes through a cloudy stage after a few days, when out in the sun, it goes through an algae stage.
After a while the beneficial bacteria in the filter will eradicate the algae, though this doesn't always happen.
Even without filtration a pond will clear up on its own, probably because certain bacteria outweigh the algae.
A search on Google will probably give a more scientific explanation.

Greenwater will die off after what it feeds on dies off.

On a similar subject, that greenwater can be fed to really really small fry such as danio/tetra fry.

Forget the water changes, they do nothing for cloudiness or algae, they actually make it worse.
Water needs time to go through bacterial changes, adding new water slows down these changes.
I'm pretty sure for Goldfish and Koi ponds, people use Hay in their filtration systems and also in the ponds, this seems to have some effect on algae.

Pretty sure it's barley straw they use to kill the nasties. They sell it at hardwares and variety stores. LFS may also carry it.
