well i would rather let them spit, as i seperate them and i can''t strip them very well.<
>but i left a female hongi go, and she held for about 3 weeks and went down there last night and she''d eaten them!<
>so, i''m a bit peeved,<
>so i''m going to try stripping my other females after about 2 and a half weeks.<
>see how that goes. Steven & Amy<

If I plan on growing up and selling the fry, I usually strip between 14 and 18 Days. If I dont I let the female spit naturally in the main tank, and a few survive.<

Yea stripping them can be a pain, but i have left the female is a seperate tank before by herself and she actually culls of the weak ones. Spits them out, eats the small ones and then takes them back in. <
><
>So i reacon if you got a spare fry tank and actually want the fry then stripping them is the best way.<

well on a
ighter note,<
>i just went down and had a look at one of my elec blue females that has been holding. her mouth looked packed as it could get so i reached in and grabbed her and presto, she spat about 20 babies out, good size ones too.<
>so i whacked in some frozen baby
ine shrimp and they hammered it!<
>my first batch of elec blues!<

With my Fronny''s i always strip because the female will hold for over 30 days to me this puts alot of unneeded stress on her so i strip and feed after 5 days and the bubbler''s do the rest.<

Congrats, I got my first batch on Hongi also. Only 8 but still good that they are
eeding. <
><
>In another 4ft I have 4 hongi I was growing out to pick out the females, they are about 5.5 cm, and one of them has been holding for 9 days now, and they are so tiny themselves, at least I know I have one definate female <

I would rather leave them to
eed naturally, <
><
>BUT this is not always possible if you actually want any fry. I stripped my female duboisi today after 10 days, i got 3 from her maybe been hatched 1 or 2 days i beleive she would be a good mum and hold to term, but dad is a problem fish and constantly harrases the  two fems ( yes this problem is compounded by the fact their is only 3, instead of 15+.) i usually place a divider in there after she is holding, but again i think dad  would eat anything that he could.<
><
>yes only 3 fry,,, but their yolk sacs are 5mm in diameter and she is still young at about 6cm..so not a bad effort.<
><
>in 7 weeks i will probably be doing it again to her. Mick, Rockhampton<

I always strip the babys out just b 4 she spites them<
>I don''t lose as many and its easer on the female<
>i just hold her over the net and use a tooth pick or you can just hold her with her head in the water and wash her back and forward and she should spit them out with out stressing her too much

i think if you have a fish that does not carry weather due to tank aggression or what every the reason then do so. anyway i will not say to much on this subject but have done trials with both and found no difference for me.<
>do what suits you personally

The answer is simply,  do  you want to save the majority or let the majority get eaten? too easy.<

You want the numbers take them early. I strip every thing in my room every two weeks, the females condition sooner and have bigger numbers more constantly. stripping usualy takes 4 hours.<

I cannot see the need for debate here, my summary is this.<
><
>If you wish to produce fry for either commercial or reproductive purposes the ONLY method is to milk females.<

Placing a hungry female in a tank of her own to spit them out, ok fine, what if you aren''t there to feed her or get the fry out in the first few hrs? eaten fry?<

>Strip, tumbler or sieve system for the eggs, large % saved.<
