Title: Juli's mixing it up
Post by: cichlidwoman on December 22, 2005, 12:08:25 PM
Hi,

My Julidochromis Marlieri (juli's) has breed with my with Julidochromis Ornatus, never expected it as I didn't know until now that they cross bred.

So, as we all know most hybrids are looked upon as worth nothing. What I am wondering is if anyone knows if the offspring of these two have a name and if they're disregarded as hybrids in a negative way? As far as i know(I've been googling the topic), no other juli's crossbreed. For anyone who's interested they look like Julidochromis transcriptus...

Juli's certainly will crossbreed as you have discovered. It is not unheard of. They prefer thier own species though. They certainly are a crossbreed, and regarded as a hybrid in a negative way. As already mentioned,  you should keep or destroy these fish in the interests of the hobby.
Transcriptus 'gombe' are supposed to be a hybrid between Marlieri and transcriptus. But this occured in the lake itself, and they breed true to form hence their acceptance I guess.

Cheers....
