hi all,
ok went away for a holiday, mate looked after fish.
came home noticed 15-20 dead fry from 1cm-3.5cm
in 2 tanks. gave them a water change 25% on tuesday night.
as of an hour ago, i have about 15 left out of 250 fry
will probably be dead by morning.
any idea's why maybe.
ph and temp same as normal
cheers dave.
i try to never change the water if i have bristle nose fry. in the past when i did they all just died, except the bigger ones
i change it if i think there are eggs, then when they get to about 2cm ~ about a month later. been lucky ever since
good luck
normally do 25% water change on my b/n every 7-10 days in the past have had very few loses.
but to have so many in so little time made me wonder
thanks dave.
Who looked after them. PM if you like.
Possible overfeeding or maybe shed not opened up one of the reaL HOT DAYS. They don't always die all at once from overheating. Sometimes their organs are cooked so they die progressively over a few days after they were overheated.
Just possible.
Linda
didn't think of that linda.
fish were only fed every 2nd night.
so the shed didn't get opened at all.
on the bright side they were the only loses,
could of been worse peppermint b/n fry were in the next tank.
it was my old neighbour, lives 2 mins up the road.
done a good job considering he does not keep fish.
cheers dave.
How long can it take fish to die from overheating cause I had some yellow fry just keel over and I can't figure out why. They too are in a shed that didn't get opened up on some of the hot days. Is it generally the little fish that don't make it?
Wilson.
in the last few days i've lost 4 bn sized 4-7cm, don't know if it's heat or not, other fish seem fine.
oh well, could be worse
BN seem to be affected by the heat badly.
We had a back bedroom that we had fish in years ago and that room heats up terribly in the afternoons.
One summer we came home to find the fish in about half the tanks dead, the shrimps had turned red like prawns when cooked and a couple of tanks still had live fish but not looking too happy.
Did all the usual things, increased the aeration did water changes added ice a bit at a time ect and had the remainiing live fish looking pretty good by morning. After about 2 days they progressively got sick with nothing we could really put our fingers on and started to die off. We called Steve Pycroft as he is a friend of ours and he came out and cut open a couple of dead ones and a couple that were alive but clearly not going to make it and all of them had their livers cooked. Looked exactly like liver you cook for yourself in colour. So it was the liver failure from the overheating that actually killed them. Some lived for 8/9 days but all fish in that room died.
This could happen to fish left in locked up cars too long or I even suspect some fish from auctions on those really hot days may suffer from it too.
Cheers Linda
very informative post linda.
there's just so little on these really hot days that is effective.
i've tried more aeration, water changes, ice, but all of it seems rather ineffective.
I had to fill a new tank the other day, and even at 8pm the water came out of the tap at 29 degrees! :?
what can ya do.
I simply remove the glass lids, throw some mesh on top of the tanks,(prevent the jumpers form getting out) :? run a fan across the surface.
Temp hasn't gone above 29.
They are in the garage too, which is the warmest room in this house.

Frenchy :D
hi all,
thanks for your replies.
i removed the 4 adults to a different tank after the fry began to die, they were looking good, home this arvo the 2-female, 2-male adults are no longer, they were covered in a white slime.
cheers dave.
Steve as Frenchy said remove lids increase aeration and try to increase air flow in the room. The fan is a good idea
Fish first affected are small fry which are still on the tender side and then the big fish like large cichlids ect as they tend to find the reduced oxygen content in the water more of a problem. The warmer the water the lower its oxygen carrying capacity so hence increase aeration helps the big fellas.
Air Con is the way to go and then you can sit in the room and watch the fish and be cool too.
