I used to spray my tanks with the cheap pressure pack paint tins. Never really had a problem as long as the back is clean. I used to do many light coats and use up the whole tin.

Some paints are toxic on the inside, for the outside you can use anything.
If its the outside your doing, use masking tape and newspaper to stop overspray from going everywhere, especialy inside the tank. Make sure its clean, use alcohol/metho. You can spray heavy because you cant see the runs on the outside from the front.

hi cichlidkeeper.

Mask up the area you dont want to paint and buy some enamel paint and use a roller, a small pile roller because enamel paint will flat'in out better, then get a clean soft paint brush and very lightly go over the area with the brush to flat'in out any air bubble's this is the way professional's do it to get that super flat gloss finish.

ps:work's out cheaper in the long run if you are doing many tank's and use methylated spirits to clean the area before you paint.
