Title: Advice needed - breeding behaviour - electric blues
Post by: Ulysses048 on January 23, 2006, 11:12:07 AM
Trying to be a responsible breeder with no cross breeding, I have recently set up breeding colonies of electric blues, electric yellows, crimson tides, red empress.
The excess male e/blues were put in a community display tank containing mostly males - tangerine zebs, johanni, e/yellows, blue dolphin and a couple of cuckoo cats.
The largest electric blue male is demonstrating vigourous mating behavior - shuddering etc - to what I thought was a MALE e/blue - certainly is a lot "bluer" than the females in the breeding setup!!!!
He has now chased all the other fish down one end of the tank - and entices this "male" to his "nest" - a piece of slate!!!
Do fish know sexes??? - have I got a "gay" fish??  - or is he just "testing his wings" and looking for a girlfriend?
Your advice and experiences in this regard would be appreciated.
Thanks .........

ive seen this also, from what i have obseved is that the less domonit male will play alond with it just to stay out of trouble.  either that it has been feed on white crain or it is a fag

at the moment in my blue colony i don't have as many females as i'd like so currently i have 3 large males, and 4 females (in a 4x18x18).

mine display the same behaviour but i beleive it's a dominance thing, nothing more.

Thank you for the advice and relating your own experiences - a fellow enthusiast suggested I put a couple of females in the tank - and guess what, one already has a mouthful !!!!
It seems he was really wanting to breed and was lacking female company.
