Just watching the different threads in his forum there appears to be a large number of people taking fish and other items into the auction to be sold outside the auction.
It is just my opinion but those people doing this should be paying Q.F.A.S. a % of all sales made, the same as everyone else who puts items through the auction.
It is not only the RIGHT thing to do but the HONEST one as well.
Q.F.A.S. foots the bill for the rental of the hall and other costs and spends a lot of time organising these auctins for the hobbyist. There are also a lot of volunteers who put in massive efferts to run them.
People who sell outside are not only abusing the privalige of having the auction put on for them, they are also insulting every worker and every other hobbyist at the auctions.
ALL items for sale should be put through the auction or at least a % paid to Q.F.A.S. and if they are not then they are in fact ripping off every other hobbyist that attends the auctions.
If you want to organise to swap or sell fish outside of the auction then meet down the road at the shopping centre carpark not at the Auction.

I don't really think there is much point to that, It will still be the auction bringing all these people to the same place. Does it really matter if they exchange fish at the auction or across the street? You will find that most of the people buying and selling fish outside the auction will still support the event by purchasing fish from the auction as well.
Dave.
I disagree with you Graeme.
The fish that you alude to have already been sold prior to Auction. They are not for sale or swap at the venue but merely using the central location for drop off and pick up.
By your reasoning BP, Maccas, HJ's, etc; as a convenient meeting location, should earn a percentage of fish sales.... I dont think so.
So, no, they are not abusing the privelige of the auction (in fact, im sure most, if not all, will either hang around and purchase or sell items at the auction - thereby supporting QFAS). Are you also suggesting that QFAS should be recompensed for the privelige of being able to catch up with mates? Ridiculous!!
If it was such an issue of cost then QFAS could charge an entry fee, but it's not, and they make enough from the sales to warrant holding the event.
I agree that the volunteers but in a fabulous effort (most of them board members.....) and we all thank them and appreciate their efforts, as can usually be seen on the boards post auctions.
My thoughts.
Cheers
Steve
Agreed with Steve...
what a crock
What a load of crap.
Pete.
I dont agree with this at all, Dont know if you brung this up because people where buying fish outside that you couldnt sell in the auction???
I would agree if someone pulled up with a sign and started selling direct out of there boots, But i would guess 90% are pre sold, and who cares if someone grabs a bargin in the parking lot, thats what its all about.
Every Auction i have been to you have trouble getting a seat inside, so you want those people to go down the road?
I think your idea would hurt the auction more than help with sales.
crap,
It's simply a convenience to the buyer/seller of being in the same place at the same time, as opposed to having to travel to the other side of the city or whatever.
Saying to goto the servo or store :? , fish are still changing hands.
This in no way detracts from the auction sales.
I have fish in which I have been trying to sell here on the forum, and what I still have left will be sold through the auction, the club still gets their %.
We all appreciate the efforts and time the volunteers make in getting these auctions going, and we all recognise them for it.
There is no difference where you meet someone to sell/buy fish.
It's all a simple matter of convenience.
I agree with everyone else a lot of the fish have been sold before the auction and alot of the guys selling live too far away to come down for a weekend whenever they sell fish so the auction gives them a chance to get the fish to the buyers and sell other fish at the auction as well. I have got a pair of fish to pick up myself but also am staying for the auction to see if a particular species I am chasing will pop up. I used to attend these auctions about 8 years ago and they used to go til four in the morning at least this way people still get rid of their fish and will be home before sun up.
First off i would like to mention that i am one of the delagates to QFAS from the Gold Coast Aquarium Society, and also an admin on the QUEENSLAND CICHLID FORUM, i find my self in a hard place.
These are just my thoughts on this matter and have nothing to do with QFAS, GCAS and QCF.
For the sake of the three ppl that are openly doing this, 2 from central qld and one from the gold coast, i find this to be making a mountain from a mole hill,
and both parties are also entering fish into the auction propper.
All the fish are presold before they get to the auction site, via the QUEENSLAND CICHLID FORUM and have nothing to do with the QFAS organization and you think there should be an amount payable.......
I would like to put a price on the advertising QAH and the CICHLID GROUP
get via this forum let alone the endless chat/avertising that the QFAS auctions recive in the month leading up to any of the four auctions per year...
turn a blind eye to it,
it wont go away
and you cant police it.
wayne.

Maybe the Brisbane City Council Should be aproached to put up temporary parking metres in a 1 kilometre radius to the hall from the hours that the auction is running...... .. That would stop those people abusing the QFAS auctions and make it fair for everybody...
I agree that the members of the QFAS, or whoever volunteers on the night do a great job at the auctions... A big thank you goes out to all of them... Especially that weird guy with the goatie in the kitchen who kept wanting to show me his "sausage" roll....
But seriously....
With the work of the "volunteers" I am sure the 20% fee covers the total costs of the auction, power, bills etc..
If the Q.F.A.S. is worried about being fair, maybe selling fish should be banned outside the auction is that radius... Hopefully the Q.F.A.S. will see the light if that happens and offer valet parking......
As most of you know I will support QFAS and the Auction workers fully and still do but, in this case most of the fish swapping outside is by previous arrangement for fish that have been purchased prior to the auction and as most people have already pointed it is simply an easy way to pickup your fish. I have 2 lots to collect at this auction, both of which would have wasted me a day by the time I drove to the place collected the fish and back again. In both cases I was the one who asked if they were going to the auction and could we meet there. In both cases these arrangements were made 2 weeks ago from ads that were placed on this forum.
I will still have my usual lot for the auction and will probably buy as well at the auction.
Possibly a couple of people are 'car boot selling' with no interest for the hobby or respect for the auction and I would agree that it shows a lack of manners but I do think the majority of people are only meeting at a place they were both going to anyway.
Sorry Graeme
All I will say is I went to the last two auctions only to meet people and swap fish in the carpark and ended up buying inside also. If it wasn't for the deals I made prior I would not have gone

Graeme, I could understand your frustration at the above, [b:2f83fe449f]if it were true. [/b:2f83fe449f]
However, you need to recognise that in fact people are using this forum on an ongoing basis year round to negotiate the sale of fish and other items, and are merely using the fact that both parties will be attending the auction at this time as a convenient meeting point.
I have not personally seen any post which indicates anybody will be turning up at the auction with fish and other items available for sale outside the auction process. I have however, seen a number of posts indicating people have fish and other items for sale which can be collected from the seller at the auction by prior arrangement. There is a significant difference in these two scenarios.
As you well know, I personally have been attending the auctions for many years, and regularly offer my 3 bags of any one fish for sale through the auction process, as well as assisting with the running of the auction by "running" or "scribing" or as otherwise requested by the organisers. And I do regularly buy fish myself through the auctions.
Living on the Gold Coast, my 4 times a year all day and most of the night trips to Brisbane for the auctions are an opportunity to call in and visit retail shops in Brisbane, meet and socialise at the auction with other hobbyists I have met through this forum, and yes, buy and sell fish and other items with these hobbyists by prior arrangement.
Given the tone of the previous posts and my own feelings, I believe you run the risk of a lose/lose situation if you choose to pursue this argument.
Cheers, Doug
Ok, lets assume you were able to organise a hit squad of QFAS stormtroopers to police this proposal - will these stormtroopers patrol the two adjoining streets to the hall, looking for some unsavoury deals going down?
What would happen if someone goes to the auction prior, happens to run into a breeder they know, likes some fish the breeder is planning to sell, and arrange to "covertly" meet at KFC down the road to do the so-called illegal transaction?
What are you gonna do? Storm into the KFC carpark with sirens and flashing lights attached to passenger car wagons (filled with buckets and air compressors in the back), and take down the offenders screaming "FREEZE, that's a QFAS inspired deal and your breaking the laws of the auction!!!!"
I mean, SERIOUSLY!
There is not enough room in the hall anyway, if they wanted to police it, get a bigger hall and set aside an area for a swap meet type setup. Im sure people would be happy to pay for a table or spot to setup there own stall.
I don't think there is anything wrong with Graeme speaking his mind since clearly this bothers him. If it bothers him, it may bother other auction volunteers. Good to see almost all comments have been constructive.
I don't see this as any different from same fish club members organising fish swaps and exchanges at normal monthly club meetings but can see why it may upset auction volunteers if it is done blatantly. If it annoys people, perhaps auctioneer can put out a public announcement for private fish swaps to be done outside the carpark? It would be different if people KNEW it bothered volunteers but continued to do so.

Well I'm going for the first time. Been going to go for the last 3
You will recognise me i will be the guy in the sky mask and black jumper
But don't get to close i might pull a zippy bag from my coat and try and sell you a poorly bagged gold fish
Of which i blow up from the exaust of my car
And if you have a closer look, its finns are shreaded
And i tell you its a cross between a fighter and a gold fish and I want a $100 for it.
Then you see it has a white fluffy coating all over it and I tell you it's bread crums from my soggy cheeze sandwitch cause i ran out of the good baggies
But be careful I just might steel the oxygen from your nicely bagged fish and disappear into the fog! lol!
Enough of that, if people are worried about missing out on their cut
I think some one should put out a donation box
So the people that feel guilty about getting fish from outside the hall
can pay a small fee
I don't make a great deal of cash my pride and joy is a 6 foot tank
I draged out of a guys shead and paid $100, for the scratched up piece of crap, It leaked like a sive and took 3 goes to fix.
I know some people cringe when they see me pop up in the chat room,
I know My spelling sux and I'm so slow at typing, that Its 3 lines later I get what I have to say in but by then the comversation has moved on,
I carn't help being dyslexic which don't help at all
So To all those people that have bothered to try and chat to me and the others that have sold me cheep fish
Without them I could not replace my fish that die from old age lol
Thank you for your time and not worry if you see me in the chat room I will sit in my corner with my foot in my mouth and just watch. lol!
Oh! My wife helped me with the spelling so you all could at least undstand what I wrote.
Even though I did disagree with Graeme I don't think either he or QFAS or any of the clubs need a bagging. There are a couple of people who DO take advantage of the venue and I seriously doubt if they will ever do a tap of work to help the hobby or be bothered thinking past the point of making a couple of bucks for themselves.
Who knows they may have something that they would have made more money on if they had put it up for auction. But it really is only a couple of people, the rest is just a convenient place to meet and I doubt that here's anything that can be done without affecting the innocent parties as well.
But just for the record QFAS does a hell of a lot more with the proceeds of the auction than pay the hall rental, just think back to the L168. Who fought for years to have them listed.
Cheers Linda
Just remember that the money that changes hands outside usually always ends up inside buying fish AT THE AUCTION.
I know the couple of times I have organised to pass on something at the auction before hand I have gone home with less than I intend because something good came up. Money I would not have spent if I hadn't got it OUTSIDE.
Just a thought.
good point phil.
the money does usually end up inside anyway.

Yep, hit the nail right on the head there.
i think Graeme has a right to speek how he feels as this is what forums are for. look i do not know him or many others but hey it looks like he volinteers his free time for who ever attends these actions. I praise people like this as many would not step in and do as they do. thanks for your opinion Graeme. if i ever meet you one day Graeme, i will try and not do dealings in front of you as i now know it would offend. keep up the good work. :D
i and a few other travel hundreds of km's to this auction, and we simply do not have the time to meet every one at there homes, we also put a huge number of fish in the auction, we also buying a large number of fish in these auctions, and there is a lot of people who know nothing of these auctions and only come to meet us there and then these people normally go inside for a look and end up buy fish, and then next auction they come back and sell fish and buy more fish as well, is that a bad thing??
i reckon this post is more pointed towards me and my northern mate, people do not have the chance to just pop around after work or on sunday arfternoon to pick up fish off us, we really enjoy going to the super auction and meeting up with every one and so forth.
in the past it probably looked worse then it was as we always seemed the be late getting there, then we have been madly trying to bag the hundreds of fish we have brought down for the auction, then our fish buddies come over and say g'day and help us out, so can see how someone looking over the road at 20 blokes surrounding my big red wagon may look like we are just selling fish out of the back of the car. simply not the case, have a look at my post and see how many are getting sold outside the auction. not bloody many.
all our sales outside are pre-organised. "It's all a simple matter of convenience" for both parties. normally fish sold outside are not run of the mill stuff. this auction will be our biggest, we are bringing down a stationwagon and trailer full of fish with most off them going into the auction. so i don't really think the few fish sold outside is hurting anyone.
look forward to catching up with every one at the auction.
cheers lloyd 1300 km's round trip.
and on that note,
i think everyone has had their say and it seems pretty unanimous.......
we might just put this puppy to bed...
see you all at the auction......
