Yeah, we all know about the nets and what they do and after the recent drowning of the baby whale the other day, there looks like a good chance of em being removed.<
><
>I reckon they should do away with them alltogether, I surf as much as I can, and do see sharks on occasion,I sh!t myself whenever I do see them mind you ,but they just swim on by doing there thing, anyways 95% of the sharks that are removed from the nets are caught on the beach side of the nets, swimming back out to sea. <
><
>The nets do more harm than good with regards to all the other marine life that gets trapped and drowns in them too. The money spent maintaining and clearing the nets in my opinion would be better spent on shark proofing our local canal systems, as they are teeming with the little buggers,<
><
>If you get attacked by a shark in the sea, theres no real point in complaining about it (if you survive), as you have made the choice to enter there territory, sure its a sad thing that does happen, but its called the food chain - and were not at the top of it when we are in the sea. Cheers<

>very well said mate, we are still animals in the food chain and you go in the sea you take that risk. i have surfed with sharks many a time, heck some of my mates didn''t even used to get out of the water. it''s like swimming up north where there are crocidile warning signs.... someone gets eaten then they shoot the croc, WTF???? <
>i used to do the shark run on straddy and we caught some good sharks but i still feel bad as they were only trying to get an easy feed <
>then there is the shark hunters who think older sharks teach younger sharks, LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL and that they stay in the same territory. bullshit!<
>we are not a nice meal for a shark, too many bones....<
>adam (aka, animal lover)<
>lol Greenslopes - 0422 329 647.
Honestly I swear theres more shark-attack! tv shows than actual shark attacks!<
><
>Unless you live in real real shark infested areas they''re not needed like the ones on the Gold Coast. fish fish fish fish turkey fish fish gobble
<
>The shark usually approaches the coastline via where the river runs out to sea(food), or chasing schools of fish, from there they cruise up & down the coast line. What really do shark nets(1km long) placed out the front of lifesaving clubs do? Then again gold coast rely on tourism & people are fickle.<
><
>Think about if we were on their menu, sharks being the good hunters they are, there would me multiple attacks every day.<

Very well said Ash, this thing makes me so mad.<

But if they take the nets down, it will only take 1 attack for the politicians to lay blame on the removal of the nets.<
>And they are real good at convincing the general public that we need them.<
><
>Realistically - Double edged sword!!!!
whats one baby whale ,a bit more crab pot bait if needed be anyway. if the asians get their way we all mite be eating them anyway
You''ll find that some of the nets are actually big hooks with big chunks of meat on them. I know the one a Burleigh was about 3-4 years ago. But you''ll find that the sharks still get in we wen''t snorkelling around Burleigh and sore a baby Hammerhead.<
><
>Cheers Adam <
>P.S. theres a good doco on National Geographic about sharks I watched it the other day.
<
>Quote:whats one baby whale<
>Good attitude, Thats like saying, what can a couple of cane toads do? How about a couple of Nile Perch in some African lakes?<
><
>More than one whale has died in the nets(amongst other sea creatures) & they can''t prove that those nets have saved a single human. Whats one human being? There are more of us than whales.<

>I am also not a fan of Japanese eating habits, oops scientific tests sorry. <

Quote:I am also not a fan of Japanese eating habits, oops scientific tests sorry. me neither but thankfully it only seems the rich can afford such a "delicacy". But the powers that be are trying to
ing the whale meat into schools by offering them cheap "whale burgers" <
><
>As Justin said there are other creatures that are getting caught in those death traps every day but only the whales get a mention <

its as justin and adam say, on the coast the only place with real nets is infront of the surf clubs, and even some clubs dont have nets, but hooks instead. i know for a fact that Burleigh still only has those hooks with chunks of meat on them. and really, wouldnt chunks of meat attract sharks towards the beaches, in particular Burleigh as the "nets" are very close to the shore (i have swum out to them with some mates, they arent far at all)?????? and as kath says, it isnt just the whales dieing in the nets. many dolphins die each year due to getting caught in the nets, as do turtles, many fish and the occasional sea bird. and isnt it funny that the only fatal shark attack in the last few years was in a canal, a man made waterway, which are known to have the highest concentration of sharks of any areas of shallow water (eg. rivers, reefs, estuaries, etc.). how many surfers have been attacked lately??? ash you are absolutely right, the money should be spent "shark proofing" the coasts canal system instead of being wasted on "whale killers".
[quote:a658c59832]how many surfers have been attacked lately??? [/quote:a658c59832]
I cant remember the last time an actual surfer got attacked,
but my mum was the person that dragged the old guy out of the water that got attacked in the burleigh canal system.Shes a member of the GC canoeclub and they were all kyaking on the canal system, on ther way out for there paddle mum noticed an old guy swimming near the shore with his dog.On there way back from paddle mum noticed the same dog barking and carrying on wildly running up and down the shoreline, and then she noticed something floating on the surface, she paddled over and it was the old man lying face down, she immediately jumped of her ski and dragged him to shore as she thought he may have just had a stroke cause of his age, but it wasnt untill she dragged him up onto the bank she saw the lacerations to his leg. He died and that was when the 'hero' shark catcher went and caught some sharks in the canal system and was on tv for it. When the tv crew were down with mum at the water front, the shark came back and was cruising the shoreline and was captured on camera by the tv people, mum was lucky the shark wasnt around when she jumped of her ski to help the old guy.........and all this happened allmost exactly 1 year to the day after my father died, you could imagine how my mum was.
True story
hey!!! who let you in here????
Is that the same guy who was swimming the canals for 20+ years?
yeah, my mum got to know the family a little, and it was his daily ritual to go for a swim..........
wow, das creepy shit, ur mum actually found him, yikes!!! i dunno wot i would do in a situation like dat. and for ur mum to do it after losin ur dad a year b4, hats off to her for sure
