Title: Auction Opinions?
Post by: nemo1981 on February 19, 2006, 11:05:34 AM
So what did we all think of the auction.
Anyone pick up a real bargain?

I know a breeding pair of 7cm ish albino bn went for like $53? crazy!

Some very nice fish came up, good variety, lots and lots of plants.
I think everyone was sick of the duckweed by the end of the night.

Was quite a big one too, just after midnight!

So, how did you do?

I didnt make it down for this one  :(  Was at the MONSTER TRUCKS in Charlton instead... :?  Not worth the $25 entry, but hey.

So yeah - make me jealous and envious of your bargain purchases and record prices!!
Were there many L#s or shellies??

Cheers
Steve

Yeah I could only stay for a couple of hours, but just enough time to catch up with a few guys and meet some new people.
Would've liked to stay however - even if I sit there for a few hours and not buy a thing I always learn a thing or two as the auctioneers go thru  their speil.
They certainly do a great job. ))o

That was my first auction in 8 years glad to see some old familar faces are still there and greg still trying to work out how to get fish pictures on the overhead.  But still 12.10 is an early finish the last one I went to finished at 4am and after an hour drive it was daylight when I started to unpack fish. I heard though someone had a dummy spit afte I left at 11.45pm. but you always get one.

It was a good night to catch up with some old and new faces!!!!
I brought lots of fishes and even some plants this time.
Was dissapponted that some plant stuff i brought was expired.
I also brought 4 bags of mollies and 3 bags of guppies which all had fungi and white spot. Which i might ad were all dead today
Also there were many bags that had holes  and  were poorly tied so no air at all in the bags or not enough water. (sorry to grumble)
Glad i brought spare bags and will bring extra water next time.
Overall a great night thanks to the organisers :D

We enjoyed our first auction immensely - got some bargains - great to be able to put faces to usernames - and we too would like to thank the organisers, auctioneers, runners and behind the scenes voluntary help who did a great job .....
On a personal note, we would like to give special thanks to someone (he knows why) and braddo (he also knows why)  Special thank you also to mudskipper and the guys from the North who travel such distances to support events such as this.........
We were so enthused by the event, we went out and bought a 7 ft tank today to extend our hobby/obsession further.
Soooooo nice to enjoy the company of such nice people with similar interests - we will be back !!!!
Many thanks - Carole and Graham

OK well one thing we did learn about the auction was that no gravel will be auctioned off unless you have a stat dec from some bloody govt body saying that your soil/gravel is fire ant free or is from a fire ant free area????

how many fire ants have you found in your tanks??

anyway.....

Regards the problems people have with bags, I think it pays to always organise taking a few buckets with lids, and a hole drilled in each lid with one of those cheap battery-operated air pumps attached that come with the airline and air rock (see the ones AOA sell)
A mate and I brought four large fish between us and two of the bags had problems where there's no way the fish would have lasted. So lucky I had the buckets ready to go.

Do tell what the dummy spit was about?  :?

great variety at the auction but my lot didn't get thru till just before midnight and by then everyone had had enough and were spent out bit unfotunate for those of us you have to wait for babysitters before putting our lots in
but otherwise all was great

i was there until about 12.40, i didn't see anyone spit the dummy while i was there.
I think by the end of it the only people left were sellers waiting to pick up their $$ and fish.

I heard someone spat it at the end over wanting 2 bags of fish that someone had turned down and then decided they wanted as they had one the bidding and wanted only 1 bag of the 3. So this person got a little bit irrate. I believe it was the same person who had to look at nearly every bag of fish as they were announced I am sure you all saw the one I meant.

Post by: waltec on February 20, 2006, 10:09:07 PM
As to GTR73 suggestion of using buckets, the boys from CQ use buckets with sponge filters (like AOA) and the pass ins from the Auctions were out of their tanks for over 60hrs. They have tried lots of different methods of getting fish safely to and from Brissie and the filter works the best by far.  They also use an invertor and 4 outlet pumps (lots of air) and this trip down their biggest loss was the 1 bucket they missed plugging into a pump!!!  They coped a lot of crap again about selling outside, but you need to remember that this trip cost a lost more than the $20 fuel for us,  and they were still outside the hall repacking the fish ready to return home @ 2am.  thats dedication!!!!

Just remember
$300 for fuel
$250 for tyre blowout
$250 Speeding Ticket (long boring drive)

Catching up with good friend @ Auction  PRICELESS

PS Nemo  The Albino BN pair was $60, and have settled in nicely thanks!!!

Thanks All

Matt
Title: Auction
Post by: OPM069 on February 20, 2006, 11:10:45 PM
Hey guys

Just in regard to the selling fish for pick up at auction, is it not so that if all of those fish went through we would have been there till 2 or 3 in the morning.

Also maybe because it is such a big auction it should be split into 2 sections of (plants & accessories) & ( fish ) maybe Fish on Sat and plants on Sunday or even Plants in morning and Fish in afternoon.

I dont think that it is possible to push them through any faster as there is always 2 tossers that will fight over 1 of 3 bags of a fish, and in the end both loose out.

It could also be said though that if fish weren't being sold outside more would be sold inside instead of being passed in.
I am NOT talking about fish that were sold prior to the auction from some ad on a forum private arrangement or whatever but
Somewhere along the way for whatever reason the balance of buyers and sellers has gone out the door and I personally will be giving selling away for a while after the GC auction because of it.
Cheers Linda

Now THAT is a great suggestion. Or even if they start plants early at 3.00pm and get at least an hour's worth thru prior to the fish stock. Or just start the whole thing earlier perhaps. But not a bad idea.

Uh oh, me thinks another debate is about to erupt.  :?
So are you saying Linda you're pulling out of auctions altogether or are you not selling anything prior to an auction anymore?

Can you please elaborate for everyone - did you go home with lots of unsold fish? Or did you not like the dealing going on outside?
Title:

I didnt notice anyone selling outside, maybe i just wasnt devling into the black market deep enough.

Ok! so at what time did this occur ? If it was after the auction who would be buying maybe the sellers that have picked up their takings, because none of the buyers had any money left.

And therefore I believe it is those sellers that will screw the whole auction for the rest of us.

Also if it was after the auction I am sure that deals have happened in the past, I would rather sell than drag all my pass-ins home.

You have to remember that the pass-ins never went through again and I'm sure there were hundreds or fish passed in.

In answer to questions.. We will still attend auctions and help out but from here on we will be flying fish down from Cairns so until sales start to pick up we will not be bringing fish down. WE would have to hold them until Sunday afternoon then put them on a flight back and then not be able to collect again until lunch time Monday. It isn't something that I want to put the fish through. When sales pickup then we will consider bringing them down with us.
We are not simply flying down for auction.  Will be buying fish from couple of people that we have arrangements with, visiting son and grandkids ect as well.(before someone coments pickups will be made Sunday).
There is no dummy spit intended, its just a fact that with 1/3 of the fish you take being passed in it just isn't economically vivable and most certainly not good for the fish.

As far as splitting the auction goes who is going to do the work you mention. Are there any volunteers out there or do those that do it now have to forego putting fish of their own in just to get there for a morning stift too. Everyone has work and family commitments as well as you do.
The subject has been raised many times at QFAS meetings and they did add 1 more auction to the calander. It used to be 3 QFAS auction and 2 GC auctions. About 2 years ago they slotted in an extra one in summer if you think back and this was done to try to lighten the numbers at the summer auctions. It has lightened the load a bit. At least we don't go home at 4.30 anymore. Also the 4.30pm start was introduced to try to make the night earlier but really all that has happened with that is the first lots up are nearly all passed in because people either aren't there that early  or are still out putting their own fish in.
A bigger hall has also been mentioned with auctions going in 2 rooms but then people would complain that they were in one room and missed something in the other. Apart from that it would require at least 2 more auctioneers, 2 more pencillers and 2 more runners.  6 or people willling to give up there time.  Any volunteers?.
I'm not saying it works perfectly but with the limited numbers of people to work the thing I don't see that there is much alternative however well thought out practical sugguestions are always welcome
Cheers Linda

I missed 1 question. I have never sold anything outside the auction.
Have delivered fish from prior arrangement a couple of times and this auction picked up some that are to send to Bob in Cairns and arrangments for that was made 3 weeks ago. It was a bulk buy and certainly not auctionable numbers.
As I said in thread on this subject, I don't see anything wrong with people who are both going to auction meeting there and delivering fish that have been arranged prior to auction, but I will repeat I have never sold anything that was not a previous agreement and never will.
Also have no problem if someone wants to sell a passed in after the auction is over. Public at auction have had there chance at it and declined. Have sold a couple after myself but have given QFAS the 20% afterwards. I've already said my bit on this so rather than having me repeat myself look up the thread on it.
I look forward to all your suggestions
Cheers Linda

Let me just add all the fish that the boys from CQ sold outside were pre purchased none were actually sold on the auction night only what they had put in the auction which was a lot of fish.

Rightio....another big auction trip, yes indeed.

There are a few who have no idea but the bulk of you all clearly do.

Yep, i am the biggest "offender", ha ha, of this..selling outside the auction, and i have to laugh at the critisism because as if i bring things to sell in the carpark on an off chance- are they dreaming?? would we drive all the way from up here to do that??? ha ha ha, it is the same as i make it down every month and presell things, the auction being a convenient meeting place. let me tell you, Aspley HJ's, caboolture Macca's, Taringa HJ's, Moggill Ferry, Riverview Train Station and everyone else would be in for a cut on the same grounds of critisism we copped in the week leading up to it :)

To the critics, he he he...tell me..... we have a long way to come (ie, i drove over 2300km on the weekend to get there and back) all fish outside were presold, and the auction...we put in 7 boxes of fish and had to bring 3 boxes worth home, having such a long way to travel we'd need a week off to get to clayfield and bag them all so yeah, we checked in for selling but a bit late (running around town to get spare tyre fixed cost us getting there early), as soon as we could get there but it meant out boxes were the very last one's up, so no real buyers left at that time of night- hence hauling 2/3rds of the fish back home...would you really have wanted us to not presell, but put even more fish in the auction to have it run so late that people all go and we have to bring them home again.

I always have a great chat with a number of members of the Qld Cichlid Club who are genuine fish fellows like myself, and well, they're not troubled with me or us guys at all, they know what we do and it's just a few outspokens one's making the ruckuss.

I think that we should put issues to rest, i'll be dissapointed if it comes up again as we've been coming down for 3 years now. If the auction can't get through pass-ins as it will be too big a night, what grouds are there for people to complain? We've got to presell a few fish, otherwise how can we afford to come down and spend the copious money we do on buying fish at the auction and also the comission we give through selling them :) It's no problem, people come to the auction to meet us should be considered good that we bring a lot of people along for the first time.

It was a big trip, not as good as most thanks to some government revenue raising courtesy of lovely Mr Seargant Monto, but never the less, great times with great mates, one particular champion especially still outside helping us unbag fish well after the hall was all locked up!

So there you have it, another big trip, some excellent fish, some great times and great mates. Here's looking forward to the next one!

Ps- a good mate at the auction gave me the tip, we'll hope to have a deep cycle battery in the car this time, save having to run the car every couple of hours to keep the battery charged :) Inverter, buckets and sponges the only way to go, means when you buy a fish you take it out to the car and they are happy as larry.

good one's fellows, QFAS did a great job, well run night as always so good work. Shame we were last but hey, someone always has to be i guess and we always try but it's pretty hard getting there early!

Andrew.

The comment I made about the balance between buyers and sellers going out the door was probably poorly worded and was not intended to imply the outside trading was happening this auction. It was more a general comment, probably should have said the balance is out of wack or something but it is frustrating to all including the CQ people having to take home a large percentage of what you have offered up especially when its not more common things or adding to the endless bags of flamebacks, duckweed ect.
With having to come from Cairns in future and with the freight offices closed weekends up there we cannot consider bringing fish down with so many not selling. Its that simple.
If outside trading has stopped thats great and I'm not only refering to CQ people. Others have done it too and we all know it.
I understand completely the problem of not being able to sell your fish as our hands were tied too while Bob worked at Bay and the auction was one way we could use to dispose of some of them so I do understand CQ peoples dilemma.
We too always take 6 or 7 boxes and have done for years and until receintly very seldom had to bring home passed ins, and the passed in weren't put through this time because nothing much was selling the first time round so it seemed pointless at midnight to even try to sell them again.
The auction seems at present to be attended by people who are there to sell their fish and the ones who used to come to buy fish seem to be small. This is what I meant about the balance going out the door.
As for positive suggestions to help improve the auctions by all means think about it and voice your opinions but if it requires more workers to implement suggestions then would probably be put on hold until such time more people are willing to give a few hours of their time.
Cheers Linda

I've heard ppl saying they hold their bidding to the middle of the auction I dont know why because the fish being sold are all quality fish whether they are sold at the start middle or end.But maybe its a mind set some ppl have. For me I go to buy certain fish (usually end up buying lots more)  and bid until I aren't outbid.I might buy  the first lot auctioned or the last.

in my opinion there is too much crap (not quality but quantity that people dont want) like flamebacks and convicts going thru auction. not meaning to offend people who put them in but they take up a lot of time in the auction and most dont sell. also there are a few fish where the reserves have been put too high for what they are, therefore they are passed in, once again wasting a lot of time that could have been selling time or time for earlier pass-ins to be put back thru.

as to the selling outside, i am not a veteran auction person but the only selling i have seen outside was pre arranged like the CQ guys do, or was conducted after the auction when people ask sellers what they have left. mostly this later selling is only a small number, and while it is not money going to the club, i dont think most people do it intentionally so that the club doesnt get its share. usually it isnt the sellers (who the money goes to) who are pressing a sale outside after the auction, but the person wanting to buy the fish.

i think people should just get over all this debating about a load of crap, everyone is basically saying the same shit anyway!!! and so what if its a late night??? so long as your fish get at least one run thru the auction its better than if there wasnt an auction. just enjoy the night in the presence of people who enjoy the hobby like yourself.

my 2 cents worth
