hey guys can u give me ideas on wat fish to start off on making bit of money on the side
Hey John, If you get into Tropheus and build up a good number of tanks and rare variants you can make a little bit of money of those as rare T's are about $60 - $140 for 3-4cms.
Start of with something easy like Angels, they breed easily & when you learn how to rare them correctly they grow quickly & they are good sellers. :D
i suppose the old peppermint and albino bn are still goers
How much experience have you got in breeding fish is the first question.
personally i would get a massive pond in the back yard and buy yourself some saratoga from a fingerling farm. You can pick them up for around $30 each. Then you can grow them to around 15cm and sell them for a profit. 10 fish wont get you much but selling multiple batches of 100 saratoga may get you some money on the side.
having a market to sell 100 saratoga would be the hardest part lol.
there's a market for everything, just being able to tap into it is the hard part.
got to the local lfs and see what fish he needs the most and see if he would be willing to use you as their supplier fora few species
generaly but
bristlnoses, all types
electric yellows
these allways seem to be in demend.
personally i would rather sell one fish for $20+ than 20 fish for $1 each
less tanks, food, power, time, effort....but a loss will hurt the pocket a lot
as mentioned if you havent had much experience dont get difficult/rare/expensive fish....
If your in it to make money, then your in the wrong hobby!
Cheers
Boyd
i dont think in it for money anything wrong.
however i also have a 8ft display tank with fronnies that i love.
other than that i wanna make some money on the side to keep interested as well as can afford more fishies
i might start off with electric yellows.
i've been in the game for bout 5 years, but never have tried breeding for bit of money
I think what Boyd was meaning was, there is no money to be made in this hobby.
By the time you raise the fish, spend money onpower, food....then try & sell youngins....
Frenchy :D
that's true,
by the time i had grown a couple batches of fish for 2-3 months, what money i made off of those, went towards upkeep of the fish, power bill etc.
lots of things to consider.
I'm happy if I can get a colony to pay for itself what with food, electricity costs etc - aside from the joy of keeping them. 8)
i agree with wat ur saying but, i have a sump and that i think is best way to use less electricity, and as for foos just get cheap shit.
so one sump running 6 tanks for eg is not much, water change i dont do much of cause i dont like doing it
LOL, im sure your fish are gonna love to breed for you if you dont change there water.
Seriously most fish that fetch a high price are the ones that are harder to breed, and to breed them you need really good conditions, Not cheap food and no water changes.

i totally agree with Boyd .if you are only in it for the money then your in it for the wrong reasons. i have 60 tanks and cannot make a profit in any one year with all the bills/ re building of colonies /food etc,etc .i do it for the peace and harmeny of it all. to start out ,mate, your better of starting of with something easy to breed (you mightn't get much money for your effort, but you get experience ). also you can sell a lot more of $3-$4 more then you can sell $20 fish .
cheers scott
Personally you are looking at it wrong especially with the water change and cheap food i have been in this hobby 30 years now and one thing I've learnt is that cheap food don't cut it and water changes are a nesecity no short cuts. When you breed fish if you don't water change you get deformities once you get a name for selling deformed fish it is near impossible to sell fish. Also you must feed the right foods to get maximum colour and growth and spawn sizes learn't this from experience. I don't agree with not being able to make money from this hobby because it can be done if you have the right amount of tanks and lots of land but that is above our budgets.
If you are serious about breeding fish for money aim to cover costs and to breed the best of what you breed strive to be better than your mate that breeds fish.
Don't take this to heart but with what you have said so far I suggest you stick to watching your tanks and enjoy it.
Go for it Johnwilly1000
I reckon it would be years before you have to worry about making enough money, that the tax man will show interest in you. Or for that matter even turn a profit
A sump isnt the best way to save money on electricity.
Think it through a bit. If it was possible to make a heap of money out of it with no or little effort then everyone would be into it
great ides mate. i reckon you will make even more money if you dont feed them at all.
seriously man
with your water changes. the growth you get out of your fish from doing regular water changes makes the water changes worth it. unless you use alot of purigen. (purigen: 100ml=$30....water bout 50c for enuf for a year)
there is NO money in breeding fish....unless your name is doug
8O then :? :?: then
Frenchy :D
rotf........... im with boyd!!!!!!
Ok as every 1 elce has said clean your tanks get a few yellows
Grow them up to about 4 to 5 cm's take them to your locail fish shop swap them for a more expensive fish breed them
And in a while you will work your way up to a good expensive fish
And sell them on line
If you don't put in the hard bit
Just stick to gold fish they look good and you can get 10 fish 4 $10 lol
do you know what fish is the most sold in pet and aquarium shops?????
gold fish and gupies
you might only get .50 a fish but they breed like rabbits and you will never have trouble getting rid of them, ill bet you cant keep up with what the shops will want.....
that's true wayne.
guppies, are little winners.

except fed for feeders
guppies :?: its so hard to find really nice ones now days
Frenchy :D
hey guys .50 cents for guppies my daughter is getting a whole dollar for hers. lol
so your getting ripped off, or
they feel sorry for her because she is my daughter
she's doing better than i am.
hhhmmm interesting
ill prob start off with 3m pond out bak to breed gold fish , wat sort are best and can the live outside in the cold.
r we talking feeder goldfish or the better looking kind
Im not trying to be rude here cause i know forums are for finding out info and stuff. but if i were looking for info i would use this other site i stumbled accross onec.....i think it was called google. you may of heard of it??
dude if your lookin to make a little extra money than get a job delivering papers or something. the pay is better and then you can enjoy your fish instead of seeing little dollar signs.
im syre if you put your grey matter to work you can think of something worth your time that is worth more money......like um......
i think we all ahd your dream once and some of us have learnt that once you go into fish for the money they never seem the same again. you will honestly never enjoy fish again like you do now. :(
i got into breeding fish for the experience, and thought that what i might make back would cover my overheads (setup power food etc).
well [b:57f793f3eb]IT DOESN'T[/b:57f793f3eb] and it won't, at least not for a while especially if you're breeding more common fish.
now i am glad to be getting out of that side of fish because as many here can tell you, if you don't have the dedication and give it the time it deserves it's a waste of time.
I'm putting this post up again in case some people didnt read it in the other one, as it applies to this post as well.
[quote:48006ef797] Hey Willey you are one funny hombre.

[quote:48006ef797]: how much can i earn per year before tax comes in? [/quote:48006ef797]
and then
[quote:48006ef797]: i have nothing to sell at moment however im thinking of buying some fish and breeding or doing something else such as little business [/quote:48006ef797]
and
[quote:48006ef797] : im gonna just stik sign out till someone complains [/quote:48006ef797]
and then
[quote:48006ef797] : hey guys can u give me ideas on wat fish to start off on making bit of money on the side [/quote:48006ef797]
I wouldnt be too worried about the taxman for quite some time, generally speaking, you need some kind of a plan before you can make money. Also some fish and then breed them and raise the fry.
You get an "A" for enthusiasm but you are putting the cart before the horse.
Actually a better question would have been,"How much time, money and effort is needed, before the money comes in".
[/quote:48006ef797]
You can make a small amount of money out of breeding fish, if you know what you are doing. The problem is, the amount of time, money and effort that has to be put into it is not commensurate with what you get out of it. So you [u:48006ef797]really[/u:48006ef797] have to be dedicated and like what you are doing.
Realistically speaking, I doubt there is another occupation on the planet where you would get so little for so much effort.
Theo
Well The only way I know how to make $$ with little efort
Is to go get some seeds grow ya wacky weed sell the shit get caught doing so and loose more than you started with
Simpeal don't you think? lmao
Not tring to be funny
But for most people its just a hobby
You sell or swap a few fish to cover food or power this is about the best u can do
Unless you set up a big fish room with heaps of fish
And may be in a year you might spin a profit
Andrews suggestion of wacky weed seems to be the best for you.
I don't mean to be rude but if you don't want to do water changes and don't want to spend anything on food don't bother and as far as a hole in the ground full of goldfish...you've really got no idea. What are you going to give these goldfish to spawn on? do you even know when goldfish spawn or how to sex them, what are you going to do to stop toads & dragon flies going crazy in your pond or keep birds out of the pond ect .
It seems you think all you do is add water and bang you have fry and until you realise that breeding fish sucessfully requires time, effort and a reasonable setup don't waste your time or money.
Cheers Linda
Yes, of course you can make money breeding fish. There are commercial fish breeding establishments in just about every country around the world.
But like any live animal breeding or growing venture, it is a 7 day week, 52 week a year job. NOT a hobby.
The proffit per unit produced is measured in cents,,,,not dollars. Proffit that is, not selling price !!!
Even high value units are labour intensive, expensive to house and feed. So, unless you have a couple of Mill$$$$ spare to invest and employ a stack of quallified, experienced fish keepers, forget making money and kick back and enjoy the hobby.
Willy,
Give it a go. At least you have your eyes open and have a bit of an idea what to expect now..... Auto water changers are easy to setup and ponds/pools are pretty cheap.
yes but were would we be without them
