Been wanting to put lighter coloured gravel in my African display tank (other than the good ol' Coffs Harbour stuff), and wondering if anyone knows where to get white gravel or similar, but not at premium prices.
Thanks
hey GTR73,
my best bet would be to just head down to your local landscape place and have a look at what they have! they general have small white gravel for like 20kg bags for like $20 but if i was you i would go with white sand it is generally cheaper a bit of work to clean it but in the end looks better than gravel and your africans will LOVE IT!!!

I have it on good authority that the shell grit on Shelly beach is not bad!!!
The landscapers sounds a good option, thanks.
Was thinking of sand also, but does it hold bacterial colonies like gravel? What are the pros and cons?
pm wolfdog, he had some he was selling a while back
I have just brought some silver sand to do my 6x2x2 tank I've just set up with african cichlids. I brought it from local landscaping place and only cost me $13.00 to do the whole tank as is cheaper to buy in bulk. You need to run the filter for a couple of days before you put the fish in though as water becomes quite cloudy at first but once settled is fine.
Try some of the specialist labdscape or gravel yards. I know my local bloke has "Byron Bay White" in 3mm and 5mm.. It is not quite as rounded as coffs, and is all white with a bit of coral and shell here and there........ideal for hard water tanks.
From memory, about $13 /bag,,,,just a bit cheaper than coffs..

P.S.......Gee,, I love the "Newby" tag,, :P .....when you consider that I was one of those keen fish nuts who put up cash to get this site off and going years ago......before we even had a single sponsor to help out.
