Title: are mosquito fish / Gambusia legal?
Post by: zoezealand on April 15, 2006, 06:23:41 PM
hello,

last week I was holidaying on the sunshine coast, and the hotel had many lakes filled with fish, so I collected some out of interest,

I am reasonably sure that I have mosquito fish (what makes me unsure is that none of the 10 I have are gravid, and being livebearers, this surpised me)

anyway, I think I read somewhere that it was illegal to keep these in queensland, because they impact on native spieces, can anyone verify this?

thanks

They are on the noxiuos species list and highly illegal but unfortunately they are in all our waterways

I think its ok to catch them but not to remove them from the area of  where ya got them
In some states u have to distroy them
and it a 10000 $ fine if u get caught selling them

Gambusia affinus are a declared noxious fish in Qld.    The same penalties apply as with tilapia.

If the ornamental lakes are on hotel property they could be in for a nasty , expensive surprise if fisheries visit.

Don't name and shame like I said earlier our waterways are full of them and if there is a creeck conecting to them more than likely that's how they got in, I checked rules and it says in your posession so even if you have them in a bucket you can be fined. More than likely the hotel don't even know what they are or that they are in there.

Do the enviromentally friendly thing, like my friend does.

Catch them and feed them to your pet Jack. If you don't have a Jack, find someone who does! Then sit back and watch the carnage!!!!

Mind you, this Jack of my mates killed his much bigger Saratoga, so those little mosquito fish don't really stand much of a chance!

He just tries to do his bit for nature......

i was told that in NSW its illegal to remove them from the river alive, you have to kill them straight away. im not sure if its true, but you dont want to be caught with a bucket full of  them
