Title: Julidochromis sp.
Post by: Clarkii on April 25, 2006, 05:32:21 PM
Hi all, Is it possible to keep Julidochromis species in a community african tank?, say with some mbuna eg E-yellows & others.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

it is possible but there is a chance the mbuna will knock em round a bit although in saying that I have done it myself without a problem. But they were the first in the tank and other added later.

G'day champ,

I have never tried them in with malawans before so can't say, but i have not had problems with them in tang tanks, when they are the only cave dweller.

I suspect in with mbuna they will be competing for the same area in the tank so the julies might lose out.

cheers,

Andrew.

Thanks Braddo & Andrew, I think I'll reconsider & pehaps set up a small tank just for them. Andrew since you have a lot of Tangs, are the Julidochromis marlieri "Burundi" available & have you had any experiece keeping them?.
Thanks again for your replies.

Heya,

I have 12 juli's in my 6ft with malawi's and tangs. They are fairly large now(6cm) and have bred a couple of times, about half of the babies survived so I would agree that you should only mix them when they are a little on the larger size. I have plenty of rocks for them to hide in so possibly that is why they're so happy.

Cheers,

Alana

g'day champ.

marleri julies hey, 'burundi', yes, i have kept some before and had a breeding pair of them for a little while before my male killed of the girls he was pairing up with so never any successful spawns from them unfortunately. I just found them a little more aggro in the pairs but that might have been becuase they were wildcaughts i'd say, rather than aquarium bred.

Nigel and Sooty have been the guys to get w/c julies off in the past but i am sure there will be some people on the forum with some, they do occasionally pop up at the brisbane auctions.

See how you go champ,

Andrew.
