To breed bristlenose is it better in a tank or a bath tub and what is the trick to start them off.
Best way to divide tanks.
cheers lee
well for you being up north put a bath tub out side, fill with water, put in some logs with hole in them then add BN. if your sure you have 1 male (not to big as they do go off the boil when they get really big) and say three fems you shloud be right....
ive also made fly screen to cover mine to keep out the frogs, they will breed in the tubs too.
I was just talking to Andrew from up north about the very same thing to day lol
I was wondering if I coverd the tub at night with somthing to keep the days heat in would the bn be ok over winter
i tested the temp around 2 and it was 27c
what do u thing Wayne?
i was just thinking the same thing tonight for my pond......i had to make a frame to go the pond and cover it with mesh....had a slight prob with a burra, and was thinking some sort of plastic sheet that i could drap over of a night....
wonder how that bubble wrap stuff would go as it has two layers and air in the middle.......come to think of it i like the idea.....
cant ya get that in a heavy duty, like they use over swim pools??
ya know the blue stuff that floats on the water....
some times its scary!!!!
Actually I am about to test this theory by making a whole hothouse out of bubble wrap. I know I sound cheap but have priced proper hothouses and the cheapest I have found for the area I want to cover was $1600. I can make a hothouse out of polypipe and bubble wrap for around $200 even if get only 2 seasons out of it until I can afford a proper hothouse.
normal bubble wrap will break down fairly quickly in direct sun add a bit of wind and its history. The same applies to the blue swimming pool stuff in the cheap brand, my neighbors didnt last a year before it disintergrated. Good idea tho, maybe some research on UV resistance ( I think its UV that wrecks it) of different brands and grades might bring forth something that works.
I have heard a couple of different times frames on how long BW will last everything from a couple of months to 3 years so the only way to find out for sure is test it.
Well U can get the heavy stuff the bubbles r bigger
As for it bracking down in the weather you can get some of that black plastic they use for concreating
And cover the pond or tub 1 hour befor sun down or longer on a realy cold day to heat the water and it should keep the toads out and help keep some of the heat in
Well the rest is up to u guys
Andrew

I know you used to be able to get a clear version of the black builders plastic so if you can find that could be another otpion.
I don't realy know where u can get it but Polyam at brendail might be a good place to start
the clear heavy plastic was called VisQueen, was available in several diff thicknesses and was used by concreters as a water barrier, try Bunnings
Do they need airstones for air or do I put a filter in tub. Can you put water lillies on top for coverage. do they need anything else.
cheers lee
I usually just have them in 1 tank in my system, if I'm keen and have the time I will strip the young as the start to change colour, if not i leave them in the breeding tank and net out young as required.
My best results have been from my 2.5' Tang display tank in my bedroom, 12 months ago I purchased 2 small Bristlenose cats from LFS. A couple of months ago I woke to find a dozen or so young swimming around. A month ago I removed this pair (to system) and replaced with 4 small ones (from my main breeders). Then last week again I woke to find young swimming again. I removed this colony last night to find another batcth of eggs, so at least 2 females laying. Turns out it looks to be 1 male 3 females, male is only 6cm and females about 5cm. Didn't relise they could breed this small.
I have now placed my Albino pair (7 and 8cm) in this tank and the male is already in the rock cave, so hopefully in the next week I may have another victory to the little tank!!!
When people asked me how I bred Bristlenoses My response was just add water, and this was backed up recently when a friend from the forum asked me this question, with my usual response, to that he added that he had a colony that hadn't bred yet but nedded their tank, so He temporally put them into a 20l bucket with an airstone and left on the fishroom floor. 2 days later they had layed eggs (which later hatched).
End of the day as long as the water and food are good you should be fine.
If you burry the bath tub it will help keep th ewater temp stable. mine died from cold when i tried the winter thing
as you know i have mine in a bath tub, and up until a month ago i was getting about 100 fry /month
a dirty old tub and a few logs, and let them be i only do monthly water changes and have a few foam bubbler filters in there
"Agfilm" heavy duty clear plastic, UV stable, used for tunnel buildings in agriculture.
Mine is 15 years old and still going, but is only used in winter.
My ponds are in full sun and the covers go on some time this month, at the first sign of westerly winds, and stay on till late september.
The lowest temp I have recorded outside in covered ponds is 17*C. Corydoras and BN handle that no problem.
I have even had africans outside over Winter I didn't intend to , but a couple of dozen Ps socoloffi and electric blues escaped the net and spent the winter in a half empty pond. Thinking the pond was empty, it was left covered and the fish were not even fed for a couple months until they were found when we drained and cleaned the pond in spring.
wont the black plastic absorb the heat better than the clear??
and air, what air? no filters, no pumps ,juz do it....
i just found babies bristlenose in my tang tank, i have one male and three females. the male stays at one end and the three females all hang together at the other end of an eight foot tank. the cave he used was a medium sized clam shell. completely unexpected. kinda cool
chris
Problem is agfilm is $400 for 50m at last price Ok will last 10 years or better but haven't got that much in the way of finances right now. Bubble wrap $100 per 50m roll. Has been known to last 3 years. Which will do me until I can get a bit better off financially.
