Hi Guys looking for advice on how to build a timber 2 tier stand that will house a 4*18*20 and 3*18*20 on top with a 3*18*20 and 2 * 2ft on the bottom.
I am after advice on weather 70*35 timber will be strong enough or should i go 90*35, how for apart I should space my cross supports, what type of joints to secure the timer, how many legs (floor supports) to incorporate, do I need to strengthen area where base of tank will sit with ply and anything else you can advise.
And yes wayne if you want to quote me for a steel stand you are more than welcome.
Thanks for any advice you can give me
no no its ok, you want a big bulky stand then get on to coryfish, he's the man when it comes to timber.
but i will pm you a price...
two leg either end and two in the middle, cause 2.1m span is pretty big unless you want to go to some silly size steel, painted and foam for the tanks to sit on.
will prob do it in 30x30 or 40x40, pick up from burleigh $300.
just give me the sizes of the tanks and ill do the rest.......must be better than trying to do it your self......
did you get on to coryfish yet?????
cheers,
wayne.
waye you love to stir the pot dont you lol..
but i would go the insane size steel and have 4 legs and a single span lol
Great suggestion Wayne.
Let me know what price you get quoted.
I wanna play too.
Thanks wayne for your quote, but for $300.00 i"ll build a nice SOLID timber stand for a 1/3 the price, plus i dont think a 7 ft stand will fit into the back of my little pulsar .
Thanks anyway
Hi Chris,
$300 for a steel stand at that size is quite a good price.
Good luck!
so why does it matter if a boiler maker welded it??
i think i must be doing something right after 119 stands.....
how many you made phil??
cheers
would't it be easier and more versitile to just make two, 2 tiered stands, one 4 foot and the other 3 foot...
if you do go wood use decent stuff that is not going to warp or bend over time, esp if it gets wet, and use adequate joins, and fastening so it will not sag, or tilt to one side...
i dont wont to get into the who should make it, and how much it will cost issue, but steel stands are bullet proof, wont rot, warp, or deteriorate over time, and can be treated like crap in general..
I have only made 5 BIG steel stands so far all pretty sturdy, full gal, painted, and with adjustable screw type feet, and will make a 6th in a few weeks, i have also made a few wooden ones 3, 4, 6 footers.
End conclusion the steel looks better, lasts longer, is more robust, and easier to build, ( this was my first real introduction to welding) so having a trade or whatever is not important, a little weld goes a long way.
My stands all hold well over a tonne of tanks and water most have 6 foot spans.
None Wayne.
But then, I am not making them.
You started somewhere didn't you.
I just think your on a winner and maybe I can save the average fishkeeper a few bucks.
They are going to be made by a Qualified Boilermaker so people know they are not just made by some guy in his backyard shed who happens to own a welder (and no that is not aimed at you. I do not know your welding experience or qualifications).
If people know your quality they might not ask me for a quote i guess, but you never know. 8)

I find that statement very funny. I can not weld. I KNOW that. I would not attempt to make a stand. I have seen the results of a "looks good" weld with not penetration let go. Very ugly. A lot like asking someone who has never built a tank before (or had little experience) to make your 8 x 2 x 2. Looks fine, but are you willing to risk it.
put up ya hand if anyone who has one of my stands, have it let go??
this should be the last post on this subject.....lol
cheers
I have inherited one of your 8ft 2 tier stands. It has not given way. It's a great stand and very well made.
Mitch
Phil i agree that the statement i made may have been a bit careless, but it was more describing me, not any jo blow, And i didnt trust me either,
i had a bit of practice and then got to it all weld were ground back and checked and in some cases re-re -re welded until there was a nice penetrating weld that was free from blow outs and non-penetration. i also had my wifes dad there( his stuff) who has a few welding tickets! and maybe 40 years experience giving me pointers, and checking my work.
by the way all my stands are mega over built, most made from 75x50, 3mm duragal rails , and 50x50, 3mm duragal legs, (heaps of welded area) grade 8, inch bolts as feet, and 16mm painted boards on all.
mj who did you get it off??
Wayne, Wayne, Wayne.
Would you like me to start another thread so you can blow your own trumpet.
I never made any reference to one of YOUR stands letting go.
The comments were in reply to the post made by trofius, and were not even a slurr on him. They were to maybe make people realise that just because a weld looks pretty doesn't mean it is good (once again WAYNE, not directed at you or your stands!!!!)
I just want to give people another option. I guess you like your monopoly the way you are defending your stands.
BTW, How many planes have Boeing made, still manage to fall out of the sky occasionally though. How many Cars have Ford, Holden and Toyota made, still manage to stuff something up and have to recall cars because they could break and KILL PEOPLE.
Go Phil go!! :D

excellent point to ponder.
ok my stands are like QANTAS, the safest in the world....
oh and thats the difference between rolls royce and holden..
get over it ppl..
mine is like...
I'm a boilermaker, so couldn't help but chime in here...
Welding is the easy bit. Once you fully understand the process it's as simple as point and shoot. You could teach a monkey to weld. Where the skill comes in is in the actual fabrication of a job. On something as simple as a tankstand, if its square, doesn't have a twist in it and is welded half way decent it'll hold a tank off the ground no worries. As a rough rule of thumb, an inch of weld will hold a tonne in a straight pull.
And some of the best tradesmen i've worked with have been blokes that have never qualified for a ticket.
Aries,
drop in anytime you like, everyone else is.....
having known that an inch holds a tonne is why i weld both side of any joint..I LIKE TO MAKE DOUBLE SURE
and yes the welding IS easy, when you know how....getting the shelves nice and flat is the fun bit.
cheers
Welding is like pissing into the wind
Good or bad it will came back at ya

this so true,, i dragged the welder and a pile of RHS all over the workshop floor lookin for flat surface :D No such thing.
just cause you can weld, dont make you an engineer.theres a lot more to it.

Like i said, the actual fabrication is where the skill comes in
This is a great thread.
Once again it shows the determination of people to hold on the their monopoly.
If you make something sound hard enough no-one else will try it.
The gentleman in question has the skills. One day maybe someone will find that out.
You never know if the service you are getting is the best unless you try somewhere else.
One thing that interests me is that by the look of this thread Wayne is the only one with enough skill (welding and engineering) to make a tank stand.
I guess the fish world is lost if Wayne ever gives up making them. That will be sad day indeed. All these tanks around and no-one to make stands for them.
lol@JB, Know the feeling.... been there, done that.

never said i was an engineer but i do talk to one when ever i need to...
all is good..
If any of you have got a hole that needs digging..i mean a big hole...i might know a bloody good mining engineer :) can't weld for sh*t though, can sure as well design a good stand :) ha ha ha...i love the entertainment so many of these posts provide these days..
Are you offering to dig holes Andrew... I know a house that needs about 100 fence post holes dug!!!!
Are you free on auction weekend.......
Michael
Ha ha, Hi Mick,
I think i will be all fence post holed out after this weekend, doing my own place in Rocky :)
couldn't help myself, this thing needs some humour
