Title: Pool salt for cichlids??
Post by: craig on May 10, 2006, 07:46:42 PM
I have heard that you can use pool salt in aquariums. Can anyone give me any info on this?
e.g- can it be used and how much per 100L?
Thanks

Any salt will do as long as it doesn't have Iodine in it!!

Did a bit of reading on salt, seems we all over dose.

Then again makes an interesting comment about iodine & addicitves in salt too. Which is different to what I was told too.
[quote:23a1dec9b2]Are the additives in table salt harmful in aquariums or ponds?

The short answer is "no". Neither the small percentage of iodides nor the anti-caking additives can be considered to be dangerous when the salt is used in ponds or aquariums. There is no valid reason to use only non-iodized salt yet this is always a hot topic for discussion and argument among aquarium hobbyists. In reality, the minuscule amount of iodide that would end up in a treated pond or aquarium is likely to be beneficial (as a potential source of essential iodine for both certain plants and animals) and certainly not harmful. Fishes can suffer from goiter (= iodine deficiency) also.[/quote:23a1dec9b2]

In George W. Barlow's book, The Cichlid Fishes: Nature's Grand Experiment in Evolution, He states that the fish would be totally pickled by the salt before the iodine levels became an issue at all.

Well I use non iodised salt anyhow, but only because it's cheap as hell to use pool salt.
