Not sure if this has been discussed before but did I miss something? Anyone know that the Acei were apparently reclassified to Gephyrochromis recently, as per this familiar website?
http://www.wetpetz.com/acei.htm
Is this in the latest Ad Konings book addition or did some Lake Malawi scientist decide a genus reclassification was in order?
Does seem to make a bit of sense, as to me the Acei always were much different to other Pseudotropheus species - both behaviourally and appearance wise.
yeah mate, as far as i know they were reclassified a couple of years ago.
Yep, been classified a few years ago now.
My 2002 Ad Konings book has them as Ps sp acei, but he talks about them in the same paragraphs as Gephyrochromis moorii & Melanochromis as being similar in some ways.
But if i recall right, I think these were re classified going by teeth structure, I think this has been questioned by Ad, as in is it wise to just go by teeth. {But don't quote me on that last bit}
"BUT" :roll: if you have a read of this http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ps_acei.php....[quote:bb4b048c59]Originally discovered in 1922 by REGAN, the Acei was originally classified as Pseudotropheus, but was later changed to Gephyrochromis and then back again.[/quote:bb4b048c59]
who knows, :lol:
Frenchy :D
Yeah saw that bit on Cichlid-Forum.
How does this sorta thing happen anyway? Does someone studying the species decree henceforth Acei will be under the Gephyrochromis genus, no wait, let's change it back again. :?
And then you've got industry's influence on names also.
I'd be inclined to go by Ad Konings I guess. Just goes to show how confusing it sometimes is when identifying fish.
