Post by: nick on June 26, 2006, 09:04:08 AM
i read that (might not be true) lava rock has real bad susbstances in it...even once cleaned, it said it releases gases that are harmfull to the fish. is it true this rock is bad??

I bow hunt in the great basalt wall region and my mate who has never had ashma got it really bad and the owners reckon that the lava rock set off a lot of weird reactions in the area. they think it is gasses from the rocks, it also makes the boars up there very angry i have noted when being chased by them   But there is a lot of sooty grunter in the creeks that run out of the wall and they look big and healthy.

no problems with mine, i've had a 4 footer with lava rock going for more than 2 years now, the fish always breed, i've seen no difference between the fish kept with lava rock or without.

I find it very hard to believe that any scoriated basalt still has gas left in it. Sure all the holes in the rock are formed from gas bubbles during solidification of the rock, but these rocks are highly porus, therfor any reminant gases would have seeped out ages ago!

Regions around basalt flows generally contain rich soils, so it is probably more probable that your mate is getting a reaction from the different flora types in the region.

I have used and know people who have used scoria for years and have never had any problems! I think like your title states however that reminant gases escaping from scoria is a myth!!
