Title: Snail Eating Machines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: raycam01_au on June 26, 2006, 10:51:24 PM
I have been watching my Linni absolutely destroy the indroduced snail populations in one of my tanks! I hate snails with a vengance, and unfortunately when buying some fish recently (Shellies) they came with shells, but also snails, so threw em into my linni tank until there little tank was ready!!!! after smaking myself around the head a few times for doing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have happily watched my Linni eat every snail that pops its head out, these are really hard shelled little critters, but the Linni suck em up and out then spit out the empty shells
God love em
Just thought i would share this little story...
Nite nite peeps

Clown Loaches make short work of snails also. Especially those little black "trumpet" snails.

I put Pakistani loaches in my angel and gourami tanks - and they "licked 'em clean" of snails.
However, since introducing some plants to my colony of Tropheus Moorii Moliro - it is now over-run with the little b's.
Does anyone have an opinion as to whether I could put Pakistani loaches in with my breeding moliros???

What is it about snails that you hate so much?

I think most people are talking about those little black trumpet snails, which are a menace to any aquarium.
One snail can spawn dozens of offspring in one hit, so not only do they make it look unsightly by nearly over-running it in short time, they potentially clog up filters, plumbing etc. They essentially produce an infestation of your tank if left unchecked.
Nasty little things.  :?
Title: Why I hate snails
Post by: Ulysses048 on June 28, 2006, 01:58:50 PM
Yes - I agree - they do look very unsightly - and they breed prolificly - even moreso than convicts - would you believe??
I call them cone snails - and in the morning when I go to feed my Tropheus the tank is covered in them.
They do clog up the filters and the gravel siphon when vacuuming or cleaning the tank.
Please someone tell me it is OK ato put my Pakistani loaches in with the tropheus to be rid of these pests !!!

Post by: raycam01_au on June 28, 2006, 06:48:52 PM
as stated they are dreadful in filters, annoying when breeding little shellies as they can damage spawning sites etc, iffen i could up the ol double barrel and open up on em without destroying the tank i woulds       i have some lovely big mystery snails sliding around can handle those, but not them little suckers,,,,,,,,,,,,

when is my next SA meeting (Snail Anonymous) feeeling alittle dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how do u even get the snaels in the first place.....by fish, plants, cos i have no idea how they came to be in my tank
Title:
Post by: Ulysses048 on June 29, 2006, 07:51:02 AM
I think they come in with the plants, substrate or whatever - and every time you use the same net, vacuum, or whatever, you transfer the snails from one tank to another.
Another interesting point I thought of in this scenario is - I wonder if the snail shells change the pH of the water - are they like seashells and raise the pH which would not be so bad in an African tank - but bet my angels would not like it!!!

I really can't comment on Pakistani Loaches from experience, but I know you can introduce both Clown Loaches and Siamese Algae Eaters into an African tank no probs. Both species are naturally from a softer water environment, but a nice slow intro to harder water over a few days gets them settled nicely. And lots of people have them with Africans, as we all know   .
Plus if Paki loaches are as assertive as Clown loaches I'm guessing they'll handle the Tropheus no worries.

I don't think it'd be a problem in my opinion.

Interesting...

I have Malaysian trumpet snails in all my tanks...

>They don't eat plants
>They don't get bigger than about 15mm
>They eat left over food
>They stir up the gravel
>They breed like rabbits but I just remove a few from time to time

If you have to remove excess
>fish
>plants
>snails....on a regular basis from your tanks
they're healthy!

Ok time to put my 2 bobs worth on this little debate I don't mind the snails in fact I have them in the majority of my tanks especially caontaining fry as they eat left over food and their waste produces bacteria and micro organisms that the fry eat to vary their diet a bit from time to time I will do a snail kull but only when they get out of hand. The other plus is the cone snails actually sift through the substrate and stir it up therefore no more bad spots in the substrate. They don't eat the eggs of fish as they are in with my bn's and I get huge batches out. So the only problem is unsightly or aesthetic problems.

ok I think it is also time to add my experience with the evil Malaysian cone snails.
Ok first they invade the tank, literally fill every square inch of the tank. Then they climb into the filters, wrecking the impellors of both my otto power heads and ehiem 2028 canister filter, great that only cost me $100, i will clean the tank out in the next few weeks, no worries.
Then when I strip my frontosa female I find that while picking up the eggs she also scooped up a snail, well that means that while later brooding, the sharp snail shell has punctured all the frontosa eggs and has destroyed 40+ eggs, (estimating on average spawns)!!! Well that was the final straw.
Drain the tank fill with bleach and water and now we are free of snails.

Rod54 snails SH*T me off!

Rod and Brad,
Fellow snail lovers i bow to your undying loyalty to these little creatures! I have tried to sit down in front of the tank and think nice things about these little %#%$%$#$^$^&(*^^%^%^ i looked at the nice mystery snails and are quite fond of those, but these little brown mongrels are killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the linni miss, i destroy by squishing them against the glass and watch them get eaten, my wife is alittle worried as now i sit here for hours and talk to myself on how and what i will do to them iffen i catch em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! talk will be bleached in 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant take it anymore, i have most of the shells and rocks etc in the kitchen as we speak, all undergoing the boiling trick, much again to my wifes disgust!!!!!!!! she thought i was cooking dinner,,,,, I said darling mini escargo,,,,,,but she did not see the funny side of it,,,,,,,,,, i also have them on little toothpicks outside the tanks (DEAD) so all their friends can see them, and they will know their fate

If you do get Clown Loaches or similar to do their business on snails, cut down on their feeding in general until their work is done.
Title: my recipe for getting rid of snails
Post by: neyund on July 04, 2006, 02:14:22 PM
Hi All,
I have a few tanks with those small bastard snails too.  I let them breed, then once a week scoop them up with the crushed marble, shake the net and they come to the top of the net.  Pick them out and put them into a microwave safe container.  Remember to add some water to it.  Pop them into the mocrowave for about 2 minutes and they all cook and pop out.

And there you have it, instant popped snails just perfect food for your bristlenoses or frys put some in each tank (cos you know they are dead now) and the smaller fish will love u.

They didn't cost u anything and are a healthy source of food for bns or snall fish.

I also have a few more receipes inccluding a garlic butter version (only kidding) but why waste great fish food.

Raycam01_au, give that a try.  The shells will break down in about 3 weeks and are a great source of calcium carbonate ( buufer) for your water.

Cheers,
dan
