Title: Just a question about topic headings
Post by: here fishie fishie on June 27, 2006, 10:41:20 PM
Especially in Aquarium Trader{Live stock}

I noticed that Grummy politely questioned a header into someones post, obvious to me, it was about the title....
Now some may call Gummy Bear picky, 8O  but what gummy raised is highly policed in some other forums as it can be rather annoying, to some. Lucky for us this forum is more laid back.  8)

I have one further thing to add that can be a bit annoying, wasting time if you like. Can people use scientific names to, especially if the fish in question has multiple common names. Or use a more common, common name :P Like Texas for example.

Excuse me George but when you state, [quote:dae5560df4]PEARL CICHLIDS FOR THE UNEDUCATED FOLK LIKE ME SORRY GRUM MY POST WASN'T UP TO YOUR STANDARD I WILL TRY AGAIN MALE 25 TO 30 CM FEMALE 15 CM SILVER WITH BLUE FLECK GRUM IF YOUR STILL NOT SURE I WILL SEND YOU A PICTURE OR DO A GOOGLE SEARCH CHEERS GEORGE

  I admit once you gave such a lovely detailed discription, easy to figure out what you are selling.
"but"
From your first load of .......
[quote:dae5560df4]hi I HAVE A BREEDING PAIR OF PEARL CICHLIDS & YOUNG NEED GONE TO MAKE ROOM FOR NEW FISH $60.00 [/quote:dae5560df4] There are a few different cichlids known as Pearl Cichlids  To the uneducated   that could be,

Neolamprologus caudopunctatus

There is a type of Calvus called Pearl too

Sorry for being picky couldn't help myself. Must be a kiwi thing...gummy started it

I can't agree more, especially the scientific names. The more common trade names like Electric Blue or Electric Yellow is fair enough as those species are pretty much the one variety (even then it'd be nice to know what variety E.Blue).
I used to contact the seller and ask details of the fish they have, but too much hard work. So now I just ignore those posts.

Malawi cichlids for sale are a good example:-

"FS: Afra"    . . . . ok what kind of Afra's? And I'm guessing  Cynotilapia and could likely mean Cynotilapia afra (Cobue), being the most popular, but essentially  there's over a dozen strains of Cynotilapia afra so I don't know what "Afra" really means in this instance.
"FS: Elongatus  . . . .  I'm assuming Pseudotropheus Elongatus, but again there's about twenty types of Elongatus. I know only a few varieties would be available in Oz, but which one do they have exactly?

Not meaning to split hairs but Frenchy has a good point, and it's also in the seller's best interests. Lots of new enthusiasts to the hobby look on this site for fish being sold, so a newbie isn't gonna know what types of Afra or Elongatus or whatever are commonly available in Australia. So when they check the web to see what it looks like, confusion reigns when many varieties pop up on Google, so they simply move on. The seller has to then take his fish down to the LFS, but would've been better off spending a few more minutes doing his For Sale post.

So yeah, more details like scientific names would be good.
