Title: Dominant & Recessive genes for Longfin Albino and common
Post by: 240ZED on July 07, 2006, 08:45:26 PM
Hi Guys and Gals

Picked up a few Longfin BN from Norm which have been crossed with Albino normal BN.   I'm after as much knowledge as i can get about what genes are Dominate and what's Recessive?

I'm pretty sure that the dark colour or normal brown colour is Dominate over the Albino as he's getting 100% normal coloured.  Sorry if i'm confusing people with normal BN and normal Colour.

Anyways so i'm guessing due to basic Genetics Norms would of been a cross of NN and AA giving you 100% NA being Normal colour with a recessive Albino gene... However that would only occur if Norm's fish are NN and AA to begin with.

So in the next batch you would be crossing NA and you would get 25% NN normal colour 50% NA normal colour with a albino Recessive gene and 25% AA albino.

This is all speculation and if someone wants to correct me by all means feel free as would love more info on this.

So if that is correct and we move onto the Longfin part which is more confusing. which is the Dominant and which is the Recessive gene does anyone know?

From my limited understanding i've heard that Longfins crossed with Longfins only give you 50% Longfin and 50% Normal. If that was the case you would think that the Longfins have previously been crossed with Normal BN  but what is the Dominant and what is the Recessive Gene??????

The batch that mine came from were apparently 60% 40% i forgot to ask which was more   And the only way i could work this out was the Longfin gene was dominant and the Longfins were LC Longfin with a recessive Common Gene so you would be crossing LC with CC and get around 50 50 but i don't think this would be the case???? is there a chance that only males or females when breeding carry the gene???

Anyways i may be way off the ball hahaha   but if anyone has more info i'd love to know.

Also if someone is breeding Longfins can they say if they get 50% or 100% longfin????

Thanks in advance for any info :D

Beats me why we even have a 'Catfish' forum on this site any more.  We get more catfish posts in the general section than in the right place.

I hardly ever used to look in the general section,,,,who wants to sort through piles of cichlid droppings to find an interesting gem or two ????

You are 100% correct as far as albanism is concerned, except a recessive gene is usually designated by a lower case letter.. eg Albino = aa,  Normal NN and the cross Na.    Your percentages are right tho.

As far as the "LongFin" gene goes, I have no idea, and I haven't been able to get any sence or reliable information from any one who is breeding "LongFins".
They either don't know or wont say.

I have got a few of Norm's fish and plan to play around with a few combinations as soon as they are breedable.

We might unravel some mystries and put us all out of our misery

Alan.

I have a female longfin bristlenose ready to breed. I am looking for a reg longfin bristlenose to breed with her... If I can't find a longfin male, I will just get regular and give them a go. I will let you know how I go. :)

Now who's going to create the longfin peppermint
(that would be a magnificent sight to see)

lol.

A longfin Peppermint would be sweet as.

As for the gene mixing it will be interesting to find out. I'm in the same boat as Alan and planning on playing around with the 1's I picked up from Norm, especially when I pick up some albino's from him at a later date. Be interesting to see what we can come up with.

By the way, how nice was Norm's male longfin? Definately the best example I have seen so far, very clean markings and the finnage was very impressive. I was also lucky enough to see him spawning with 1 of the albino females he had in there as well.
Cheers,
Bryce.

I am looking forward to seeing what the combinations provide too. Nice fish Norm and thanks again for getting them across to me :)
